Alberta produced a report that provides a snapshot of the status of more than 2800 wild species in the province, entitled The General Status of Alberta Wild Species 2005. The report contains assessments for 2811 species under 10 categories : birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, butterflies, gastropods(e. g., snails), bivalves(e. g., clams), odonates(e. g., dragonflies) and vascular plants(e. g., wild roses). These assessments are based on criteria that include species’ population size, distribution and trends, and threats to habitats. Assessment information is categorized into meaningful groupings, which helps the province identify species that need attention. Species’ status data are used by provincial wildlife and fisheries biologists to plan and set priorities for species’ management activities. These activities may include identifying habitat, monitoring survival and identifying threats.

In addition to providing reception services for the Ontario Region, Millhaven Institution is one of two facilities within the region that houses a maximum-security population. The facility consists of three administration buildings and three living unit buildings. It is foreseeable that establishing a Goleta area planning commission may trigger demands for other area planning commissions, particularly in Montecito and Orcutt. While Goleta is the largest urban area, Montecito has its own zoning ordinance and a history of strong citizen interest in fine-grained land use and design regulation. Orcutt is on its way to being a large urban area with its own unique needs. Commissioners were concerned both about the efficiency and the balkanization of planning with multiple commissions.

The general idea was that statewide working groups would develop the overarching values and chart the general directions, and implementation would be left to the regions. While this approach is appropriate for a large state, we noted our concern early on about the relationship between the statewide working groups and the regional collaboratives. The microsplit designed by Otto(...) seems to be the best instrument for splitting small samples. The microsplit is made on the general plan of the Jones sample splitter but is of more precise construction. The sample is poured into an inverted roof-shaped hopper at the top of the instrument. At the base of the hopper it falls through a series of plates about a millimeter apart, which are arranged perpendicular to the long direction of the hopper. A knife edge at the base of the plates splits the sample into two parts. The splitting is repeated until a fraction of the desired size is obtained.
