Subject field(s)
  • Statistical Surveys

CONT

Victimization surveys have repeatedly shown that the risk of victimization decreases with age. In Canada, the General Social Survey, which measures victimization in the general population, does not include youth under 15 years of age. The information available regarding the victimization of children and youth comes from official sources such as Youth Protection Services and the police. We know that these official statistics are incomplete and just the tip of the iceberg and that the dark number regarding the victimization of children and youth is significant.

  • crime-victim survey

Domaine(s)
  • Sondages et enquêtes (Statistique)
  • Criminologie
DEF

CONT

This state of the law sometimes causes dissatisfaction, particularly when it is alleged that "excessive" profits have been made out of government contracts; or, when, in times of scarcity, it is said that "excessive" prices are charged for goods or services or accommodation. But the courts are not well equipped to deal with the social and economic questions involved in determining whether a bargain is fair; and it seems that their refusal in general to judge the adequacy of consideration is correct.

For example, IBM or General Motors may want to offer child care services to its employees. The company then hires a broker to develop a listing of day care centres or child-care providers. Another example is service brokerage for disabled persons. These people and their families require health facilities, educational support systems, transportation, in-home nursing care, etc. Social services will then call upon a brokerage agency to prepare an inventory of services available.
