The Constitution sets out the basic principles of democratic government in Canada when it defines the powers of the three branches of government : the executive, the legislative and the judicial. The executive power in Canada is vested in the Queen. In our democratic society, this is only a constitutional convention, as the real executive power rests with the Cabinet. The Cabinet, at the federal level, consists of the Prime Minister and Ministers who are answerable to Parliament for government activities. As well, Ministers are responsible for government departments, such as the Department of Finance and the Department of Justice. When we say “the government” in a general way, we are usually referring to the executive. 2, record 3, English, - democratic%20government

2, record 3, French, - gouvernement%20d%C3%A9mocratique

The Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries(CADSI) has its roots in the creation of the Canadian chapter of the American Defense Preparedness Association(ADPA) on November 30, 1983. The organisation's founding mission was to be patriotic, educational, scientific, and non-political. As a non-profit making membership society, it was dedicated to scientific, engineering, industrial, and management preparedness for the common defence of Canada. The organisation believed these attributes to be the strongest guarantees of national security and peace. In 1987, the chapter became an independent association under the name Canadian Defence Preparedness Association(CDPA). On November 25, 1997, CDPA's Board of Directors voted to change the name of the association to the Canadian Defence Industries Association(CDIA). The organisation operated under this new name until the Association's Annual General Meeting in December, 2005, when the Board of Directors resolved to widen the scope of the organisation's representation and mandate in light of the increasingly integrated nature of the national defence and public security of Canada. At the December 6, 2005 Annual General Meeting, with the will of the members, the Canadian Defence Industries Association changed its name to the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries(CADSI). 1, record 4, English, - Canadian%20Association%20of%20Defence%20and%20Security%20Industries

6, record 4, French, - Association%20des%20industries%20canadiennes%20de%20d%C3%A9fense%20et%20de%20s%C3%A9curit%C3%A9

In the mid-1950s, daffodils were chosen to decorate the tables at a tea hosted by Lady Eaton in the downtown Toronto Eaton's store to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. The event was so popular that Canadian Cancer Society volunteers in Toronto created an annual Daffodil Day. The Daffodil Tea became an established event in many communities across the province. On Daffodil Day, some restaurants donated part of their receipts to the Canadian Cancer Society and patrons were given a daffodil as a token of appreciation. When restaurant patrons began offering to pay for their daffodils, Society volunteers realized they could raise funds by selling flowers. The following year, volunteers took to the streets to sell daffodils to the general public. An anonymous donor paid to fly 5, 000 blooms from British Columbia, where the growing season starts early. Daffodil sales raised more than $1, 200 in 1957 and became an annual event. Daffodil Day was eventually extended to Daffodil Days--usually from Thursday to the first Sunday in April. Daffodil fundraising now takes place throughout Canada and across North America, Europe and Australia. 1, record 8, English, - Daffodil%20Days

1, record 8, French, - Jours%20de%20la%20jonquille

Established in 1959 by the Massey Foundation, The Massey Medal is awarded annually by the Society. Its purpose is to recognize outstanding personal achievement in the exploration, development or description of the geography of Canada. Eligibility is restricted to Canadian citizens, although in special circumstances, the Medal may be awarded to a non-Canadian, subject to agreement by the Massey Foundation. It is always awarded to an individual, never a group. The presentation of the Massey Medal is usually made at Rideau Hall by the Society's Patron, the Governor General, when His Excellency's schedule permits.
