Backward inference is tracing back or backward chaining, reasoning from effect to cause, or from what is acted upon to actor. In general, backward inference has higher inferential strength than forward inference. As we are tracing backward from the effect or consequence to what has happened before, there is a closed or much restricted reasoning space and, thus, lower probability of going wrong. 3, record 1, English, - backward%20inference

State dinners and other official occasions at Rideau Hall offer many opportunities to showcase our nation's culinary excellence with the finest of Canadian ingredients and wines. Rideau Hall also houses the best of Canadian furniture and art continuing a tradition started by Pauline Vanier, the spouse of former Governor General Georges Vanier(1959-1967), who began "Canadianizing" a room of Rideau Hall known as the "Canadiana Room". Now this room has been renamed the "Pauline Vanier Room". The Pauline Vanier Room is a showcase of Canada's heritage in arts and crafts. The Governor General and guests of Rideau Hall often use it as a location for media interviews. Part of the original McKay house, the room has had several uses since 1838. For a time, it even served as gentlemen's smoking room. In 1959, Madame Vanier decided to vote the space to the display of some of the best examples of Canadian decorative arts. 1, record 13, English, - Pauline%20Vanier%20Room

1, record 13, French, - Salon%20Pauline%20Vanier

Radiators, convectors, and baseboard and finned tube units are types of heat-distributing devices commonly used in steam and low temperature water heating systems.... In general, these types of heat-distributing units should be placed at the points of greatest heat loss of the space.... For example, such units are commonly located under windows, along exposed walls, and at door openings.... The term "baseboard"... refers to heat-distributing units designed for installation along the bottom of walls, in place of the conventional baseboard. They may be made of cast-iron, with a substantial portion of the front face directly exposed to the room, or with a finned tube element in a sheet metal enclosure. They operate with gravity-circulated room air.... Baseboard heat-distributing units are divided into two types : radiant-convector and finned tube. 5, record 15, English, - baseboard%20heater

Kyphoplasty is a newer treatment for patients immobilized by the painful vertebral body compression fractures associated with osteoporosis. Like vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can alleviate up to 90% of the pain caused by compression fractures. In addition to relieving pain, kyphoplasty can also stabilize the fracture, restore height, and reduce deformity.... Kyphoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia. Using image guidance x-rays, two small incisions are made and a probe is placed into the vertebral space where the fracture is located. The bone is drilled and a balloon, called a bone tamp, is inserted on each side. These balloons are then inflated with contrast medium(to be seen using image guidance x-rays) until they expand to the desired height and removed. The balloon does not remain in the patient. It simply creates a cavity for the cement and also helps expand the compressed bone. The spaces created by the balloons are then filled with PMMA [poly(methyl methacrylate) ], the same orthopaedic cement used in vertebroplasty, binding the fracture. The cement hardens quickly, providing strength and stability to the vertebra, restoring height, and relieving pain. 1, record 26, English, - kyphoplasty

1, record 26, French, - cyphoplastie

Radiators, convectors, and baseboard and finned tube units are types of heat-distributing devices commonly used in steam and low temperature water heating systems. They supply heat through a combination of radiation and convection, and their function is to maintain the desired air temperature in the space. In general, these types of heat-distributing units should be placed at the points of greatest heat loss of the space to offset or counteract these losses. For example, such units are commonly located under windows, along exposed walls, and at door openings. 6, record 27, English, - heating%20unit

The TUBA(Trans Umbilical Breast Augmentation) technique provides insertion of breast implants through the belly button. It is performed on an outpatient basis using general or local anesthesia. A small incision is made in the belly button. Through the incision, a slender instrument passes under the skin to a location behind the breast tissue. Next, a tissue expander is inserted and placed under the breast. With the expander, a space is developed to create a pocket for the implant size requested.... an empty saline implant is placed in the pocket and filled with sterile saline. In general, antistatic carpet is any carpet product that will generate less static electricity than standard carpet. [It] is not conductive and it is not possible to ground anti-static carpet [which] usually contains bi-component yarns. The reason for specifying antistatic carpet is to establish a space that will be free of static shocks, or zaps. Most new antistatic carpet will prevent shocks as long as the relative humidity(RH) is above 25%. Antistatic carpet should not be confused with conductive or ESD [electrostatic discharge] carpet. Nevertheless, clustering real-world data sets often raises problems, since the data space is usually a high dimensional feature space. A prominent example is the application of cluster analysis to gene expression data.... In general, most of the common clustering algorithms fail to generate meaningful results because of the inherent sparsity of the data space. In such high dimensional feature spaces data does not cluster anymore. 2, record 39, English, - high%2Ddimensional%20feature%20space

The modern world is full of large data sets: census data, multimedia databases, and remote sensing data, to name a few. With the aid of computers it is possible to collect scientific data on a grand scale. These examples are not "large" merely because they have many data points. They are also high dimensional, meaning that there are many measurements taken of each person, multimedia object, or point on the ground. The "data point" representing one person is made up of their age, gender, educational level, occupation, and whatever else was recorded. Suppose there are 12 attributes recorded for each person. We can think of that person’s record as a point in 12 dimensional space. 3, record 39, English, - high%2Ddimensional%20feature%20space

The Centre national d’études spatiales(CNES) is developing an atomic clock of unequaled precision, which will be launched in 2003 aboard the International Space Station(ISS). The PHARAO clock(Cooled Atom In-Orbit Atomic Clock Project)... uses cooled cesium atoms in order to reach an accuracy and stability 10 to 100 times higher than any other high-performance existing calibrating clocks. The Cesium atoms are thrown on a free flight in a cavity enabling interaction with a radio-frequency field. They then transfer their intrinsic accuracy and stability qualities to the piezoelectric oscillator. The lack of gravity increases the time in which the atoms interact with the piezoelectric oscillator, which then increases the resolution and accuracy of the clock by a 10 factor. PHARAO will belong to ESA's ACES(Atomic Clock Ensemble in Space) payload within the frame of one of its ISS program. The ACES mission will be divided in two parts. The first one, which should last six months, will mostly focus on the PHARAO clock performance. The second part of the mission will last 12 months and will allow the international scientific community to use the clock for specific experiments(clocks’ synchronization, General Relativity tests, geodesy, etc.). 2, record 46, English, - ACES%20mission

To the visual system, an after-image is located in space and its perceived size is determined by the distance at which it is viewed : when looking at a nearby wall the disc will be seen as smaller than when it is superimposed on a distant wall. PWGSC [Public Works and Government Services Canada] provides office space in accordance with the Framework for Office Accommodation and Accommodation Services and the PWGSC Office Accommodation Allocation Limits appended to that document. Departments can develop MOA [Master Occupancy Agreements] with PWGSC which will then take precedence over the generic standards. This document describes the 4 GRPs [Generic Requirements Packages] which PWGSC developed to act as models for the more specific tenant requirements contained in the MOA. Four office types are described in this document :-General Administrative Offices primarily accommodate administrative and related functions(e. g. a headquarters or regional office facility) ;-Public Contact Offices accommodate functions primarily involved with providing services to the public(e. g. offices serving the public by phone, mail or in-person such as Employment Centres, Passport Offices) ;-Secure Administrative Offices : require enhanced levels of security(e. g. NDHQ 97 is the largest accommodation project ever undertaken by the Department of National Defence or the government. It's more than just moving people from building to building. It's refitting buildings and general office space, using a new design concept called the universal footprint. It's adapting accommodation to re-engineered organizations. It's also purchasing and installing furniture best suited to a modern, dynamic organization. The headquarters will have a new look. In the four buildings... corridors will run along the windows. Offices will be clustered at the centre of each floor. Major traffic will flow outside work areas, not through them. People working in teams will have work areas designed for teams. Offices will have more natural light, better air conditioning and better ventilation. Some screens will have glazed windows to allow natural light to spill through. Each workstation will include large, well-lit work surfaces for computers and overall, will have more usable workspace. Plenty of storage space will be located above and below work surfaces. But employees will be encouraged to make the most of their space by storing information on diskette, rather than in filing cabinets. The look will be cleaner and less cluttered. And whether people are tall or short, they’ll be able to adjust their desks, chairs and computers to the height that's right for them. 3, record 58, English, - universal%20footprint

1, record 64, French, - a%C3%A9rotherme%20%C3%A0%20soufflage%20horizontal

The general principles of plant community succession, applied to the species complex in the wetlands and the expected changes in the moisture regime, could be used to predict the future plant community within specified time and space boundaries. Predicting, in any rigorous sense, the effects of the resulting habitat changes on species of concern would be difficult due to the complexity of most species-habitat interactions. Furthermore, it would be unlikely that the effects of the loss of habitat on the longer-term population dynamics of such species could be determined beforehand. 1, record 66, English, - moisture%20regime

... when war breaks out between certain powers, each nation wishing to remain impartial should normally issue either a special or general declaration of neutrality. Such a declaration, however, is by no means absolute. A neutral state may, during the course of the hostilities, repeal, change, or modify its position of neutrality, provided that such alterations are in accordance with international law and are applied without bias to all belligerents. The most important of the rights that result from a declaration of neutrality is the right of territorial integrity. Belligerents may not use a neutral' s territory as a base of operations or engage in hostilities therein. This right applies not only to neutral territory and water, but extends to air space above that territory as well. 1, record 68, English, - declaration%20of%20neutrality
