The standards provided by the Codex Alimentarius Commission are also used by many countries as their national regulation. The Codex General Standard for Irradiated Foods and Recommended International Code of Practice for the Operation of Radiation Facilities Used for the Treatment of Foods requires the use of wording such as "irradiated", "treated by irradiation" etc. The use of the international symbol irradiation is optional.
