Lasers TEA. There are two different forms of a whiteout: 1. In blizzard conditions, the windblown snow in the air may simply make it too difficult to see very far. 2. True whiteouts occur mostly in the Arctic and the Antarctic when unbroken snow cover and a uniformly overcast sky combine to produce a solid white glow. People in whiteouts see no shadows or horizon and lose all sense of depth and orientation. 5, record 14, English, - antarctic%20whiteout

When the antibodies are applied to fixed cells whose membranes have been made permeable to large molecules, they pass through the cell membrane and coat the microfilaments inside. A fluorescent label is then attached to the coated fibers, making them glow brightly when they are observed in the fluorescence microscope. Bodyclocks work by waking you up naturally with light. You choose the time you want to wake up and the light very slowly begins to get brighter(like a sunrise) and starts your body's natural wake-up process. Although you’re still asleep, your body is responding to the increasing light and when the light reaches full brightness you wake up naturally, not suddenly, to a room filled with a sunny glow. By giving your body a kind of "head-start, "instead of still feeling drowsy and confused when you wake up, you feel refreshed, positive and ready for the day ahead. 3, record 38, English, - dawn%20simulator

Classical DC(direct current) electrical discharge tube. In the glow discharge regime(10^14 to 5x10^18 charged particles/m^3, 10^4 to 5x10^4 K) the plasma is luminous due to excitation collisions by accelerated electrons. At high current densities the high heat load on the cathode triggers electron emission and the discharge changes to the highly luminous arc regime(10^20 to 10^25 charged particles/m^3, 2x10^3 to 10^5 K). 1, record 49, English, - discharge%20regime

As the current and voltage increase, the cathode current density also increases, ultimately heating the cathode and causing incandescence and thermionic emission. 1, record 49, French, - r%C3%A9gime%20d%27effluve

Photoionization detector... consists of a chamber into which gases suitable for the discharge such as helium, argon, nitrogen, or hydrogen are introduced through [a] tube which serves as the cathode for the discharge. The ultraviolet radiation or glow discharge in the hollow cathode, maintained by a small current between the cathode and discharge anode, is sufficiently energetic to ionize components in the carrier gas effluent entering through the tube, the collecting electrode(anode) for the ions liberated within the chamber enclosed by the second cathode. 5, record 50, English, - photoionization%20detector

1, record 50, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20%C3%A0%20photoionisation

In 1956, Harley and Pretorius described a simple discharge detector for gas chromatography based on the electrical properties of a glow discharge, the voltage across the gaseous discharge being a function of the type of gas present. Druyvesteyn and Penning in 1940 reviewed the complex nature of the glow discharge, noting that the discharge is maintained by electrons emitted from the cathode which result from processes related to positive ion bombardment, photoelectric emission, and collisions with excited atoms. When trace quantities of a material eluted from a chromatographic column enter the detector(consisting of a small platinum disk cathode and a tungsten wire anode), a voltage change resulted which was recorded. 2, record 52, English, - glow%20discharge%20detector

In 1958, Roberts and Hinkle evaluated glow discharge tubes as detectors for compounds in the concentration range of 5-500 ppm and concluded that the detector was not applicable to general-purpose use.... More recently, Wilhite described glow discharge-type devices which act electrically similar to a gas-filled voltage-regulator tube... Riley described the use of an argon purity meter, a glow-type discharge detector, for the determination of small concentrations(0-1500 ppm) of impurity gases in argon. 2, record 52, English, - glow%20discharge%20detector
