GO ALOFT [2 records]

Record 1 2020-11-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Skydiving, Paragliding and Hang Gliding
DEF

A parachute shaped like a glider wing that allows [its user] to take off from a mountain, or from a flat terrain using a winch, and gain altitude by finding rising air currents.

CONT

With a paraglider, you actually fly like a bird, soaring upwards on currents of air. Paraglider pilots routinely stay aloft for 3 hours or more, climb to elevations of 15, 000 feet, and go cross-country for vast distances.

Key term(s)
  • para-glider

French

Domaine(s)
  • Parachutisme, parapente et deltaplane
CONT

Record 2 2002-07-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
  • Brush, Prairie and Forest Fires
DEF

Smoke at a high atmospheric level in the (relative) absence of smoke at lower levels.

CONT

Smoke Aloft--Until recent decades, the impact of the lifted portion of smoke was ignored because it seemed to "just go away. "These impacts are generally not realized until the mechanisms of dispersal bring the dispersed smoke back to ground level. Because the smoke has already dispersed over a broad area, the intensity of ground-level exposure is minimal. The duration of exposure may include the better part of a day, however, and the area of exposure may be large.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
  • Incendies de végétation
DEF
