To complete a distress a seizure of the chattels is necessary. A seizure may be either actual or constructive. It is actual by laying hands on the article, or on one of several articles, and claiming to detain it or them until the rent is satisfied. The most proper manner of making a distress is for the person distraining to go upon any part of the premises out of which the rent issues and take hold of some personal chattel declaring that it is taken as a distress in the name of all goods, or of so much as will satisfy the rent in arrear, and this will be a good seizure of all. A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used. 3, record 27, English, - shot
Record number: 27, Textual support number: 1 OBS
"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect]. 2, record 27, English, - shot

Downshifters are the antithesis of the acquisitive yuppies of the eighties. They believe that time is more important than money and that it is better to work less and be happy and fulfilled than be well paid for struggling with jobs that are stressful or unrewarding. Though it was heralded as "a new Renaissance philosophy" by the Trends Research Institute in New York, which is credited with inventing the term in 1994, the idea is far from new and, for example, echoes the Gandhian "voluntary simplicity" of the 1930s. To downshift means to cut out unnecessary expenditure and cultivate a simpler lifestyle with time to do more of the things one wants to do, but not go to the extremes of dropping out of society or attempting self-sufficiency. 1, record 33, English, - downshifter

In order to avoid creating an unsafe condition, when the signal is taken "Off" for an approaching train and crank handle is also available for the operation of the points, it is necessary that the crank handle be kept in safe custody. The experience has shown that the better arrangement is to lock the crank handle by an electric lock whenever the concerned signal is taken Off so that it is not possible for anybody to use the crank handle for operation of the points. Alternatively, if crank handle is out, the signal should not be allowed to go to Off position. The phenomenon is called "reciprocal interlocking" and it is achieved by providing reciprocal interlocking arrangement by means of circuitry and the electric lock fixed on the crank handle. In all modern signalling installations this feature is a must in order to achieve safe train operation. 1, record 37, English, - reciprocal%20interlocking

The Ecotourism Society has guidelines to help find a truly eco-friendly operator. For example, a company should be able to show that funds from a trip go directly to the local community--this includes employing locals and using lodging and food from the area. The society also recommends asking tour operators about what they do for local conservation. Find out if they donate money to local organizations that concentrate on environmental concerns, or if the operators have established local conservation projects. 6, record 39, English, - eco%2Doperator

Fresh powder snow soon becomes "skied out", or "tracked out". This is sometimes known as "crud"(although this term is also used for breakable crust)... The problem is that the fresh snow is now packed down in some areas, and piled up in others. So the amount of resistance that your skis encounter is always changing. You need to constantly look ahead and anticipate this. When you’re about to go through a deep pile, push your feet forward slightly. For the firmer sections, stand more in the middle of the ski. Rather than persisting with the short, bouncy turns of true powder, you will be better served in crud by longer, rounder, carved arcs. 2, record 53, English, - crud

The mechanics of MEOR at a molecular level are really quite simple, but must be thoroughly understood to assess both the efficiency and the efficacy of the process. The microbes in MEOR are simply hydrocarbon-utilizing, non-pathogenic microorganisms which are endemic to, and are naturally-occurring in petroleum reservoirs. What this means is, they naturally exist in reservoirs, are safe for plants, animals and humans, and ingest hydrocarbons as a food source which they metabolize. As a result of this "digestive" process, they then excrete bio-products such as alcohols, gases, acids, surfactants and polymers, which because of their origin are all natural and non-toxic.... Changes in the Crude [:] The gases excreted by the microorganisms go immediately into solution in the crude, making it a solution gas drive reservoir once again. The gases, solvents and weak acids cause a reduction in the viscosity and the pour point of the crude, and an increase in its API(or specific) gravity. These three changes cause the oil to be thinner and to flow more freely. Some of the microorganisms inhibit the activity of SRB's, or sulfate-reducing bacteria, which also occur naturally in reservoirs, but cause corrosion in metal parts and produce the deadly H2S(hydrogen sulfide) gas. Changes in the Reservoir Rock [:] The surfactants, acids and solvents clean out the paraffin wax and the heavy crude depositions in the pores of the rock improving the permeability and partially restoring the original porosity of the rock. The polymers help modify the permeability of the rock by reducing the size of the molecules of reservoir fluids, and help prevent and control water-coning problems. The acids, solvents, alcohols and surfactants remove metal traces from the poral throats of the rock, helping to restore the original porosity and permeability of the reservoir rock. 3, record 55, English, - microbial%20enhanced%20oil%20recovery

Une fois dans le puits, le micro-organisme produirait soit un gaz pour remettre le puits sous pression, soit des agents tensio-actifs ou des émulsifiants pour diminuer la viscosité du pétrole. In English, the word abate may mean to diminish, or it may also mean to put an end to a process or practice. With respect to pollution and polluters, abatement regrettably does not mean to put an end to it or to them. Instead it means the method or attempt to diminish the degree of pollution causing the immediate urgency. Thus, when faced with a subsidence inversion and concomitant smog, a mayor of a megalopolis considers closing off certain heavily travelled streets to vehicular traffic. This would cause abatement of a temporary nature in that particular area. When a Maryland community passes an ordinance banning one-way bottles from supermarket shelves, this also could cause an abatement of a temporary nature-provided citizens did not go out of the area and bring in bootleg one-way bottles. Abatement, although desirable, is never the answer to a dangerous situation. 5, record 64, English, - abatement

Whether washing is used or not, the wheat must be brought to a specific moisture content to prepare it for milling. This is achieved by several cycles of wetting and resting. In milling technology this is called tempering. The wetting is carried out in a damping conveyor where a controlled amount of water is sprayed on the moving wheat as it is conveyed slowly to the tempering bin where the wheat is allowed to rest for a predetermined period. Following the first tempering, the wheat may go through a second tempering cycle. A two stage tempering system is preferred over a single stage, since there are occasions when the moisture content of the grain must be increased by as much as 6. 0%. It is much easier to make this addition in two stages, separated by a rest period, to allow for proper distribution of moisture in the wheat kernel. Tempering the wheat to a proper moisture content is an essential part of the milling process. Optimal tempering toughens the bran and thereby facilitates its separation from the endosperm without extensive powdering. It also mellows the endosperm and this facilitates its reduction without excessive starch damage. 1, record 65, English, - wetting

1, record 65, French, - humidification

Total Third World debt is in the hundreds of billions, piled up under the auspices of the World Bank and sister agencies when they were attempting to impose their brand of global statism on any country desperate or corrupt enough to accept the money. The majority of these loans are unlikely to be repaid, especially those to the poorest nations. This creates a problem for the people who run the World Bank, a band of bureaucrats who for years claimed that their lending practices were sound and that their loan default rates were low. What the loans did, aside from provide tax-free employment opportunities for thousands of World Bank credit officers, was create scores of nations with large, unserviceable debt burdens. 3, record 70, English, - unserviceable%20debt

Trucking has always been the mode of choice for shipping refrigerated product. But with recent developments in technology, the railways are becoming more confident they can measure up as a viable service alternative... A few weeks ago, US-based Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway(BNSF), ran its first all-refrigerated train from Illinois to California. It carried frozen product at a constant temperature for the entire 69-hour trip. There were no re-fuelling stops and so far, no cases of food spoilage... When you put a trailer on a train, there's nobody really looking after it, so if loads go bad or(the units) run out of fuel they don’t notice until it's too late. The difference with the BNSF service is the whole train is refrigerated and therefore gets constant attention. 1, record 72, English, - refrigerated%20train

One method used to uncover all the things that could go wrong is the "event tree/fault tree" analysis technique. Event tree work is not unlike following a multi-branched trail of dominoes as they knock each other over in sequence. Such analysis allows the tracing of things that could occur after the initiating events. Paths of action and consequences are traced, sometimes to great length. The fault tree technique, a favorite tool of AECB staff members, is a means of finding out what combinations of component and system failures would cause an event in the first place. It provides a systematic method of checking that the systems being relied on to prevent something worse happening won’t be knocked out by the event itself. 1, record 81, English, - event%20tree%2Ffault%20tree%20analysis%20technique
