The goal of this study is to show the feasibility of designing a space habitat that advances the ability of humans to live in space for long periods. We first review the previous work on space explorations and summarize five unsolved fundamental problems : providing gravity, radiation protection, sustainable life support systems, a large open space for human physiological and psychological comfort(survivable by professionals in trades other than highly trained astronauts), and a growth strategy to avoid the economic infeasibility of starting with the largest final version of the habitat.

Los hábitats espaciales se asemejan [...] a los refugios primitivos, a las construcciones cuyo principal fin era la supervivencia en medio de un entorno hostil. La arquitectura espacial está en una fase en la que tiene que centrar todos sus esfuerzos en proporcionar unos espacios habitables en el sentido más básico de la palabra. Espacios que solventen, en mayor o menor grado, los principales problemas que nos plantea este nuevo entorno. En este sentido, el primer reto que se nos presenta es el de proteger a los habitantes del espacio exterior, mediante hábitats cerrados, bien aislados frente a peligros como la radiación, la falta de oxígeno o las temperaturas extremas. Los hábitats espaciales tienen que ser ecosistemas completamente cerrados, que reutilicen sus recursos y no dejen escapar nada hacia el exterior. El intercambio de materia y energía con el vacío externo debe ser el mínimo posible. Es por esto que los nuevos hábitats tienen que ser completamente herméticos.

However, not all motion plans are equal. In optimal motion planning, the objective is to find the best solution that optimizes relevant criteria, such as a path of minimum length, greatest clearance from obstacles, or minimum control effort.

En esta tesis se estudia el problema de la planificación de movimientos óptimos de un robot industrial de soldadura para la ejecución de movimientos óptimos en cooperación con una mesa posicionadora. Se considera que se debe efectuar una secuencia de movimientos de la mesa y del robot hasta la conclusión de una tarea de soldadura propuesta. El método propuesto permite determinar los sucesivos emplazamientos de la mesa cooperante de tal manera que el desempeño cinemático del robot sea óptimo durante la ejecución de la tarea. El método se aplica en tres casos de estudio con movimientos 3D de la herramienta del robot.

The goal of planetary protection as stated in National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) policy is the prevention of forward and backward contamination. This policy applies directly to the control of terrestrial organisms contaminating spacecraft intended to land, orbit, fly by or be in the vicinity of extraterrestrial bodies. Viking mission landers were terminally heat-sterilized to decrease the risk of forward contamination to Mars and to assure that terrestrial microorganisms would not contaminate the life detection experiments.

The goal of upper atmosphere research is to understand the chemistry, dynamics, and energy balance above the troposphere as well as the coupling between these processes and between atmosphere regions. Together, these will help define the role of the upper atmosphere in climate and climate variability. The UARS [Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite] platform provides simultaneous, coordinated measurements of atmospheric internal structure(trace constituents, physical dynamics, radiative emission, thermal structure, density) and measurements of the external influences acting upon the upper atmosphere(solar radiation, tropospheric conditions, electric fields).

The Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere(MOPITT) is an eight-channel gas correlation radiometer to be launched on EOS/AM1 spacecraft in 1998. The goal of the experiment is to support studies of the oxidizing capacity of the lower atmosphere on large scales by measuring the global distributions of carbon monoxide(CO) and methane(CH 4) and thus, will represent a significant advancement in the application of space based remote sensing to global tropospheric chemistry research.

The goal of this activity is to conduct research for Space Solar Power Wireless Power Transmission(WPT) technology development to reduce the cost of electrical power and provide a stepping stone to NASA for delivery of power between objects in space, between space and surface sites, between ground and space and between ground and air platform vehicles. WPT can involve lasers or microwave along with the associated power interfaces. Microwave and laser transmission techniques have been studied with several promising approaches to safe and efficient WPT identified. These investigations have included microwave phased array transmitters, as well as visible light laser transmission and associated optics.

La transmission d'énergie sans fil est conceptuellement semblable à la transmission d'informations à l'aide de satellites de télécommunications, mais elle est réalisée à une intensité plus élevée. Puisque le faisceau d'énergie est destiné à être converti en électricité à très haute efficacité, il serait possible de transmettre des quantités utiles d'énergie à des intensités inférieures à celle de la lumière solaire. Les possibilités de la transmission sans fil ont été démontrées jusqu'à un niveau de 30 kW sur de courtes distances (1,6 km), avec un rendement de conversion de l'énergie radiofréquence en énergie électrique supérieur à 85 %.

Le TESF (transport d'énergie sans fil) [...] suppose trois opérations relativement simples : la conversion de l'électricité en ondes, la transmission de ces ondes et enfin leur reconversion en électricité après réception [...] Pour faire voyager l'électricité, il vaut mieux utiliser des micro-ondes, qui ont une longueur plus importante (environ 12 centimètres) et qui sont pratiquement insensibles aux perturbations atmosphériques. Dans le cas du transport d'énergie sans fil (TESF), l'électricité est transformée en un rayon de micro-ondes, similaire au rayon laser [...] mais invisible. Le faisceau est dirigé vers une antenne de réception, composée de milliers de radiopiles. [On peut] produire de l'électricité à partir des micro-ondes en redressant les courants produits dans une antenne avec une diode à haute fréquence, qui nous donne du courant continu. L'élément combinant une antenne haute fréquence et le composant redresseur s'appelle une radiopile. Chaque radiopile ne produit qu'un peu d'électricité, mais en en associant des dizaines, des milliers, des millions, on obtient à la sortie le nombre de gigawatts demandés.

STEP is currently the major activity of the Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics, which was established by the International Council of Scientific Unions in 1987. The goal of STEP is to advance the quantitative understanding of the coupling mechanisms responsible for the transfer of energy and mass from one region of the solar-terrestrial system to another. The program seeks to improve the predictability of the effects of the variable components of solar energy and disturbance on the terrestrial environment, on technological systems in space and on earth and on the biosphere. STEP involves coordinated ground-based, aircraft, balloon, rocket and satellite measurements. It is organized in six projects.
