A search that expands a tree along one path until it reaches a goal, a dead-end, or a path already travelled.

CONT

In a hierarchy of rules or objects, depth-first refers to a strategy in which one rule or object on the highest level is examined and then the rules or objects immediately below that one are examined. Proceeding in this manner, the system will search down a single branch of the hierarchy tree until it ends. This contrasts with breadth-first search.
