Nickel-copper sulphide deposits are sulphide concentrations that occur in certain mafic and/or ultramafic intrusions or volcanic flows. Nickel is the main economic commodity, copper may be either a coproduct or byproduct, and platinum group elements(PGEs) are usual byproducts. Other commodities recovered in some cases include gold, silver, cobalt, sulphur, selenium, and tellurium. Some materials can react vigorously with water to rapidly produce gases which are deadly at low airborne concentrations. For example, sodium or potassium phosphide release phosphine gas when they contact water. Alkali metal cyanide salts, such as sodium or potassium cyanide, slowly release deadly hydrogen cyanide gas on contact with water. 2, record 24, English, - cyanide%20gas

A respondent described the application of bioleaching in the mining industry and noted some of the cost issues and environmental precautions.... For low-grade refractory gold ores, the technology involves bacterial breakdown of arsenopyrite ore to expose the gold followed by cyaniding for extraction purposes. A major environmental health issue here revolves on the control of acidity in the ore pile to eliminate the production of cyanide gas. 3, record 24, English, - cyanide%20gas

3, record 24, French, - cyanure%20gazeux

In the early days of lode gold mining, stamp mills were used for crushing the ore. Where there was free gold in the ore, a silver-plated copper plate was placed so that the discharge through the screen from the mortar, with the addition of water, flowed down over this plate which was coated with quicksilver, allowing the free gold to become amalgamated and retained to the plate. The man who operated such a mill was called an amalgamator. 4, record 28, English, - amalgamator
