GOLD SALT [6 records]

Record 1 2014-06-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemistry
  • Non-Surgical Treatment
DEF

A purplish suspension of minute particles of metallic gold, made by reducing a solution of bromauric acid or other acid or salt of gold, used in medicine since alchemical times.

OBS

The radioactive form, made by exposure to neutrons, is used as a suspension in the pleural cavity to treat lung cancer.

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Traitements non chirurgicaux
CONT

A poisonous soluble salt of lead and acetic acid... which appears under the form of white crystals or flakes(commercial grades being frequently brown or gray lumps) with a sweetish taste and is used in dyeing of textiles, waterproofing, varnishes, lead driers, chrome pigments, gold cyanidation, insecticides, antifouling paints, as an analytic reagent and a hair dye.

OBS

lead acetate: obsolete form; part of the Ingredient Disclosure List of the Hazardous Products Act (Registration SOR/88-64, December 31, 1987).

OBS

Also known under the following commercial designations: RCRA waste number U144; UN 1616.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Chemical Elements and Compounds
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
CONT

In an electrical hygrometer the change in the electrical resistance of a hygroscopic substance is measured and converted to percent relative humidity. In one procedure a pair of fine gold or platinum wires are wound as a helix on a glass or polystyrene cylinder and the spaces between the wires bridged with a film or a hygroscopic salt, such as lithium chloride.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Éléments et composés chimiques
  • Stations, instruments et équipements météorologiques
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Processing of Mineral Products
  • Mineral Processing (Metallurgy)
DEF

A process for extracting gold or silver from their ores; the ore is crushed and mixed with salt, copper sulfate, and mercury, and the gold or silver amalgamize with the mercury.

CONT

Prior to the cyanide process (pioneered in Karangahake), only a small percentage of gold and silver had been extracted by the old pan amalgamation process.

CONT

The Mercur Gold Mining and Milling Company had been organized in 1890 to treat the ore by pan amalgamation.

Subject field(s)
  • Electrolytical Processes (Metallurgy)
  • Mineral Processing (Metallurgy)
  • Electrochemistry
CONT

Electrolytic processes(...) fall into two groups : those using an aqueous electrolyte, and those using a fused salt electrolyte maintained at a high temperature. In both, the electrolyte contains a compound that dissociates into metallic ions that are positively charged and therefore move to, and are deposited on, the cathode.(...) Aqueous electrolysis is employed to refine most of the copper recovered by smelting and to produce lead, gold, silver and several less common metals in exceptionally pure form.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Électrolyse (Métallurgie)
  • Minéralurgie (Métallurgie)
  • Électrochimie
CONT

Key term(s)
  • électrolyse en solution aqueuse
  • électrolyse de solution aqueuse
