Disc golf relies on one's ability to throw a disc with power and accuracy. The object of the game is to traverse a course from beginning to end in the fewest total number of throws of a golf disc. Similar to the traditional golf game, a course is composed of a number of holes, in which each player begins by throwing from the tee, and completes the hole by landing in or striking the target.

The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets; the most common is called a pole hole, an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot [lie] where the previous throw has landed.

For play the grass is cut short, lower than two inches, and has the appearance of a golf green, although a grass court must be much sturdier to resist running and sliding. Because the bounce is low and the ball skids and skips, the grass-court game is extremely fast, favoring an attacking player with strong serve and volley who gets to the net quickly. An informal or club tournament in which weaker players are paired or grouped with a stronger player so that there is no side of strong players to dominate. In golf, each of the players in a group will play from the same spot, normally the spot where the ball of the player with the best stroke(as the longest drive or the nearest approach shot) landed. Each player plays his own ball, and the best score for a hole counts as the side's score.

Usually, "scramble" is used alone. So that every player knows what type of tournament he is registered in, the event could be called a "best ball per group for each shot".
