Both evolutionists and economists argue that individuals do things for the larger group only if it is also for the good of the individual. Animals rarely do selfless things for their species. And people rarely do selfless things for the good of society. But even desiccated economists had noticed the "voter paradox. "People vote in elections despite the fact that no individual can expect to influence the outcome. People give to charity. Executives work long hours on behalf of their firms. Travellers tip waiters they will never see again. Soldiers willingly risk their lives for their country. Trust, cooperation and altruism are all part of human life. They are also part of animal life. The question is how do you reconcile altruism with the invisible hand and survival of the fittest? 1, record 1, English, - voter%20paradox

Warning : the English term "favorite", as in the phrase "The Women's favorite at the French Open this year is Mary Pierce" is, unfortunately, not seen in the press in North America as often as the more ambiguous term "top-seed(ed player) ". "Top-seed" can have two distinct meanings : 1) the one player expected to win the tournament 2) a top-level player ranked high who has good chances of making it through several rounds. On the other hand, the term "top-ranked player" is at times carelessly used as a synonym for "top-seeded player" or "top seed". One is "seeded" at the tournament level(Wimbledon, the Canadian Nationals, etc.), but is "ranked"(No. 1, 2, 3, etc.) either at the respective national or international(ATP or WTA) levels, especially if there is no mention of a tournament. No. 1 seed(or... seeded No. 1)=top seed=top-seeded player. Compare with No. 1 player(in the world, according to the computer rankings). Also, be cautious of the French cognate "favori(te) ", which carries a more subjective connotation, i. e. the sweetheart of the audience. See also "top-seeded"(adjective), "darling"(="favorite"). 1, record 2, English, - top%2Dseeded%20player

It can also be used as an adhesive to seasonings on snack foods..., as a glaze on baked goods... and to increase shelf life and reduce the need of packaging material. The shelf life is extended, because the film acts as a barrier to moisture and/or oil and/or vapor transmission. An edible coating has to have good eating properties : acceptable color, odor, taste, flavor and texture or be undetectable. An other requirement is that it must adhere to the food, but(in most cases) does not stick to packaging material. 3, record 4, English, - edible%20coating

Polyurethane leather is ... in trend as a substitute for natural leather. It is used primarily as an upper material for shoes, bags and luggage, for automotive interiors and as a coating for ball surfaces, for example. The systems are suitable for use as a finish, topcoat, intermediate coat and an adhesion coat on textile substrates. The success of polyurethane leather is due in part to its economical production, but above all to its property profile which is nearly the equal of, and in some aspects superior to, that of natural leather. 1, record 5, English, - polyurethane%20leather

Advantages and disadvantages of certain materials. Whipcord is made for laborers, postmen, milkmen, and such and will not get wet with the first raindrops. Corduroy, on the other hand, soaks up moisture too easily and is not very durable. Wool will remain warm even when drenched and is the best answer for outdoor wear. You may consider lederhosen, leather pants imported from the Alps. The knicker length variety, though expensive, are a good investment because rocks will not tear them. Non-waterproof nylon wind pants are useful to wear over other trousers in windy, frigid areas and when climbing extensively above timberline. Wind pants should be loose-fitting and have a drawstring around the ankles to prevent wind from blowing up the legs. Rain pants in waterproof fabric are of some value in wet, brushy areas, but in general the lack of ventilation makes these pants unsatisfactory. A light pair of cotton pants may be used as extras for hot weather, but are no substitute for wool pants in cold weather. 7, record 9, English, - climbing%20pants

Each summer, Sweden welcomes competitors from over 21 countries to the five day "O-Ringen" competition--the largest Orienteering Meet in the World. Filmed during the 1973 meet in Rättvik, this film follows young and old of all sizes and levels of ability as they wind their ways, with map and compass in hand, along prescribed routes through the countryside. As well, it reports on the daily events of the competition and gives a good picture of its general organization. A motivational film What Makes Them Run? is particularly suited for showing by fitness groups, recreational services and high schools. 1, record 11, English, - What%20Makes%20Them%20Run%3F

1, record 11, French, - Pourquoi%20courir%3F

Vapor Hand Pump Extinguisher-USES : Flammable liquids and electrical fires.-This extinguisher can be used either indoors or outdoors. The use of this type of extinguisher is not always advisable because of the accumulation of fumes after use. Common sense must be exercised when locating this type of extinguisher. Because they will not freeze, they make a good all around extinguisher and can be easily adapted on field equipment. To use, simply turn the handle and pump, and a 25 to 30 foot stream will be expelled at any angle. 1, record 13, English, - vapor%20hand%20pump%20extinguisher

The effect of good and bad posture can be very simply demonstrated by the following example, "The Wrist Test". When the wrist is held in the neutral position, a moderate blow can be applied to the palm of the hand without causing pain and discomfort. When the wrist is in the neutral position, it can absorb the force best. However, if the blow is applied to the wrist when it is fully extended up or down, the wrist is a poor shock absorber, and is most vulnerable to stress and injury. 1, record 15, English, - Wrist%20Test

Suppose you blindfold a man and ask him to hold out his hand, palm up. Now place a weight on his palm; he will certainly notice it. As you add more units of weight, he notices their addition too. But after his palm is carrying a good deal of weight, you can add just as big a weight as you did in the beginning, and yet this time he will reply that he is not conscious of any addition. In other words, the greater the total weight he is already carrying, the less will be the effect of an extra or marginal unit of weight. 1, record 17, English, - marginal%20unit
