Silicon Drift Detectors(SDD) are essentially 450 μm-thick discs of high-resistivity silicon which is fully depleted by applying a negative bias voltage to both sides of the disc. On one side of the planar structure the bias is graduated across the device by means of a series of "drift rings" such that a strong transverse electric field component is developed within the structure. This is used to direct electrons produced as a result of x-ray interactions towards a small charge collecting anode. On the opposite side of the device(x-ray entrance side) there is a uniform shallow implanted junction contact to allow good low energy x-ray sensitivity and minimum charge loss.

Most liquid crystal polymers have in their structure a succession of para-ring structures. The liquid crystal formation is thought to relate to the fact there is a limiting concentration of rod-like chains that can exist in a random arrangement in a solution or melt. Once this concentration is reached, ordering or alignment of the chains is necessary to accommodate them. Fibers from liquid crystal polymers generally have high modulus and tenacity, good chemical resistance, and high-temperature resistance. They are used in a wide range of applications including protective apparel, tire cord, composites, ropes and cables, etc.

A good indication of the positions of nearly all the non-hydrogen atoms in a protein can be obtained from a structure solved to a resolution of 3. 0 A or better. Such a study involves a series of stages. Firstly, tens of milligrams of the protein must be isolated in pure form, and then crystals of millimeter dimensions must be grown which diffract X-rays to high resolution. However, reconstruction of the electron density of the molecule from diffraction data requires information about the amplitude and the phase of the X-ray reflections. To solve the phase problem, diffraction data from at least one heavy-metal derivative of the protein must be measured. Thus an electron density map of the molecule can be calculated.
