The old Custom House(now part of Pointe-à-Callière, the Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History) was built in 1836, to keep pace with the expanding Port. Goods could pass through customs here in Montréal rather than having to stop off in Québec City. This was the first building designed in Montréal by John Ostell, an architect from Britain who would go on to put his name to at least 25 major buildings in the city, including the Old Courthouse. 1, record 1, English, - old%20Custom%20House

To complete a distress a seizure of the chattels is necessary. A seizure may be either actual or constructive. It is actual by laying hands on the article, or on one of several articles, and claiming to detain it or them until the rent is satisfied. The most proper manner of making a distress is for the person distraining to go upon any part of the premises out of which the rent issues and take hold of some personal chattel declaring that it is taken as a distress in the name of all goods, or of so much as will satisfy the rent in arrear, and this will be a good seizure of all. No particular form of words is, however, necessary provided the intention is manifest.(13 Hals., 4th, pp. 155-156) 1, record 4, English, - actual%20seizure

The consumer, so it is said, is the king. Or rather, with every man a king, each is a voter who uses his money as votes to get the things done that he wants done. His votes must compete with other men's votes; and the people with the most votes end up with the most influence on what gets produced and on where those goods go. Now our task is to see just how this spending of money votes-this system of "consumer sovereignty"-takes place. 2, record 7, English, - consumer%20sovereignty
