3, record 14, Spanish, - opci%C3%B3n%20de%20compra

Users typically connected via dial-up connections or dedicated async connections. The business consisted of a large public network that supported dial-up users and a private network that allowed government agencies and large companies(mostly banks and airlines) to build their own dedicated networks. ... the workers already in the workforce, who had contributed to the state [pension] system, were given the option of staying in the system even though we thought its future was problematic. Those who moved to the new system received what we call a "recognition bond", which acknowledges their contributions to the old system. When those workers retire, the government will cash the bonds. New workers have to go into the new private system because the old system is bankrupt. 1, record 29, English, - recognition%20bond

More important than economic issues is what Central Europeans call decommunization, screening, or lustration : the policy of preventing former Communist Party apparatchiks and informers from holding government office. Governments rise and fall on the issue; because they disagree about lustration, people whose economic views should make them allies are often bitter enemies instead. In the former East Germany, screening(intended to weed out former police informers) is mandatory for public-sector jobs. The Czech Republic prevents high-ranking members of the former regime, or its informers, from serving in high government positions. 1, record 30, English, - decommunization

Because distrust of government, business, the media and every other institution of society runs so high, many people do want to shut out these "official" sources of information. This doesn’t mean they are not communicating. On the contrary, their appetite for information, a manifestation of their need for communality, is greater than ever. But in place of network television and the daily paper, people are turning to what I call "the stealth media"-the 1990s equivalent of the barroom conversation. They send faxes by day and sign on to computers at night to have conversations with strangers in terms they understand-terms that would not pass most political-correctness tests but nevertheless reflect the language they understand and use among themselves. 1, record 31, English, - stealth%20media

Smog and air pollution can change the climate; water pollution by sewage, industrial wastes, fertilizers and detergents, and even by the heat thrown off from nuclear and nonnuclear power plants, has made a waste land of our earthly inheritance. The "economic externalities and diseconomies" cannot be expected to be set aright by market competition and the pursuit of profit.
