The Government Information Locator Service(GILS) system was originally developed in the United States, and in 1994 was approved by the Department of Commerce as a Federal Information Processing Standard(FIPS 192), making it mandatory for all U. S. government departments. GILS is a way to overcome that difficulty, to improve public access to government information. It accomplishes this by storing metadata provided by many different government departments in a distributed network of servers, allowing searchers to access information from sources across the government. 2, record 1, English, - Government%20Information%20Locator%20Service
