The first Representative Assembly of the Colony of Newfoundland was elected in 1833 and named the House of Assembly. This name continued to be used for the elected Chamber when the Colony was granted Responsible Government in 1855. In February, 1934 the Constitution of the Dominion of Newfoundland was suspended. At the time of suspension there were two Houses of Parliament namely : the Legislative Counsel, the Upper House and the House of Assembly, the Lower elected House. When Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949, the Terms of Union as set forth in the British North American Act of 1949(now cited the Newfoundland Act) provided that the Constitution of the Legislature of Newfoundland as it existed immediately prior to February of 1934 would continue as the Constitution and the Legislature of the Province from the date of union. Although the Legislative Counsel was not continued at the time of Confederation, the Lower House or the House of Assembly became the elected Parliament of the Province and the name House Assembly continued to be used after 1949 in the same manner as it was originally used in 1833. Therefore, the Parliament of Newfoundland and Labrador is referred to as the House of Assembly and not the Legislative Assembly of the Province. 2, record 1, English, - House%20of%20Assembly

Cod moratorium of 1992.... the federal government banned cod fishing along Canada's east coast. This moratorium ended nearly five centuries of cod fishing in Newfoundland and Labrador.... The aim of the policy was to help restore cod stocks that had been depleted due to overfishing. Today, the cod population remains too low to support a full-scale fishery. For this reason, the ban is still largely in place. 2, record 2, English, - cod%20fishery%20moratorium

4, record 2, French, - moratoire%20sur%20la%20p%C3%AAche%20%C3%A0%20la%20morue

Tenth and last province to enter the Canadian Confederation on March 23, 1949; its territory comprises an insular portion, the Island of Newfoundland, and a continental one, Labrador, attached to the province of Quebec. With the royal assent of December 6, 2001, officially amending the Constitution of Canada and making effective the law previously adopted by the House of Commons, the name of the province was changed from "Newfoundland" (abbreviation: "Nfld.") to "Newfoundland and Labrador" (abbreviation: "N.L."), thus approving the name and abbreviation determined by the provincial Cabinet. 3, record 22, English, - Newfoundland%20and%20Labrador

The name of a province and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "province of Newfoundland and Labrador" for the geographical entity, "Province of Newfoundland and Labrador" for the provincial administration, "Newfoundland and Labrador" as the short form, and "N. L. "as the abbreviation. Note the absence of hyphenation and the abbreviation without a space between the two elements abbreviated by their initial letter with a period, as the rule requires in English. When used alone, "Labrador" is abbreviated by "Lab. ". The new designation "Newfoundland and Labrador" remains singular because the entity is still a unit. 3, record 22, English, - Newfoundland%20and%20Labrador

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol changed from NF (or CA-NF) to NL (or CA-NL) on October 21, 2002. This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character provincial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign. Do not confuse the country subdivision code or symbol NL (or CA-NL) representing Newfoundland and Labrador, with the country code or symbol NL representing the Netherlands. 3, record 22, English, - Newfoundland%20and%20Labrador

3, record 22, French, - Terre%2DNeuve%2Det%2DLabrador
