A territory that entered the Canadian Confederation in 1898 as the "Yukon Territory", out of the District of Yukon created in 1895 in the Northwest Territories. Until 1999, the Yukon used to stand eleventh in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation of the ten provinces, then of the territories, listed, by convention, before the Northwest Territories even if the latter entered Confederation 28 years before. It now stands twelfth, after the Northwest Territories and before Nunavut. On March 27, 2002, the name was changed to "Yukon" even if the status of territory remains.

The name of a territory and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "Yukon"(or "territory of Yukon") for the geographical entity, "Yukon" for the provincial administration or as the short form, and "Yk. "as the abbreviation to be officially recognized by the toponymic authority, a change from the previous "Y. T. ".

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is YT (or CA-YT), [to be changed to YK (or CA-YK) if a request to that extent is made and accepted]. This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character territorial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign.

The use of the definite article in English before "Yukon" is dependent upon how it is used in the context. If "Yukon" modifies another term, then the article is omitted. e.g. Yukon Indians comprise 25% of the population of the territory. If "Yukon" takes the inflected genitive (’s) , then the use of the article is optional. e.g. (the) Yukon’s wildlife resources; (the) Yukon’s native people. In every other case, the use of the definite article would be in keeping with common usage as it signals the absence of a generic geographic feature. Hence we say "the Mediterranean" (implied: Sea), "the Philippines" (implied: "Islands"). Currently, there is some debate as to the appropriateness of the definite article, all the more since "the Yukon" (implied: "territory") is seeking political parity with the other established "provinces" (statement of 1991). [Usage can thus tend to drop the article as is the case before the name of a province.]

The first National Building Code of Canada(NBC) was published in 1941. Subsequent editions were published in 1953, 1960, 1965, 1970, 1975, 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2005. Note that the NBC is a model code which has no legal status until adopted by a province, territory or municipal government. There is often a gap of several years between the publication of the model code and its adoption, at which time the government authority may put a different date on the cover of its code.

The National Artists Program, a federally funded project held in conjunction with the 2003 Canada Winter Games, will be held in Bathurst and Campbellton, New Brunswick from February 22 to March 8, 2003. The Program will focus on the following four artistic disciplines : Dance, Music, Theatre Arts and Visual Arts. The primary objective is to create artistic works inspired by and representative of the spirit of the Canada Games. The Games motto "Come Celebrate Winter", local settings, Games sporting venues, and the wide diversity of the participants should provide an excellent starting point for these artistic works. Four participants from each province and territory between the ages of 16 and 23 years of age(one in each of the four disciplines) will be featured during the two weeks of the Games. The participant will travel on the chartered airplanes as part of the provincial/territorial teams, the cost being borne by the federal government. The philosophy of the National Artists Program is to "bring together bright and talented young artists from each province and territory(representing a variety of disciplines) and challenge them, under the guidance of senior arts facilitators, to use the games as the inspiration for their art in order to see "the artistic and cultural dynamics that can be produced when the best of Canada's budding athletes come together with the best of Canada's emerging artists.

A city of the Yukon Territory and its capital since 1953, located at kilometre 1476, just off the Alaska Highway. The city lies mainly on the western side of the Yukon River, nestled in a protected valley surrounded by Canyon Mountain(locally known as Grey Mountain) to the east, Haeckel Hill to the northwest and Golden Horn Mountain to the south. Located at the head of navigation on the Yukon River, Whitehorse grew significantly by becoming a temporary stopping point--past two major obstacles on the river, Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse Rapids--for prospectors heading for Dawson(then known as "Dawson City") during the Klondike Gold Rush Years(1897-1899). In 1900, with the completion of the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway from Skagway in Alaska, to Carcross and Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, the community grew around the point where the railway and river met, on the western side of the Yukon River. After the gold rush, Whitehorse's population dropped, but with the help of navigation and aviation companies, the British Yukon Navigation Company building riverboats and operating them to Dawson until 1954, and the British Yukon Aviation Company transporting mail, freight and passengers, the economy was kept afloat. During World War II, Whitehorse played a significant role as a key link in the north-south transportation system, hosting the Americans and Canadians in charge of expanding the air link that was the Northwest Staging Route(a series of airfields across the Northwest), building the 2300-km Alaska Highway, or constructing the Canol Pipeline from Norman Wells, N. W. T., and an oil refinery at Whitehorse. In 1950, Whitehorse was incorporated as a city. In 1953, the territorial capital of the Yukon was moved from Dawson to Whitehorse, adding the government sector to an economy made of the mining(copper, silver and lead-zinc), tourist and oil industries. An airport located in Dorval, now a part of the city of Montréal, and used for private, local, national and international flights. The airport was first the "Dorval Airport," from the name of the city in the suburbs of Montréal, then the "Dorval International Airport," to become the airport for domestic flights, that is the flights limited to Canada, with the construction of the "Mirabel International Airport" inaugurated in 1975 and intended for international flights. But inadequate terrestrial links between Montréal and Mirabel contributed to give to the Montréal Dorval Airport ("Montréal-Dorval") its international status, leaving the charter (up to Autumn 2004) and cargo flights to the Mirabel Airport ("Montréal-Mirabel"); political decisions for these ends were accompanied by important subsidies for the building of added accommodations to what has become the "Montréal Dorval International Airport." With the amalgamation or merging of all the cities on the Île de Montréal, including the former cities of Montréal and of Dorval, to form the new city of Montréal on the 1 January 2002, the airport became the "Montréal Airport," a reality usage had already confirmed. On the 1 January 2004, the airport’s name changed to "Montréal Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport" to honour a former Prime Minister of Canada as do other important airports in the country. The official name will, no doubt, not be quoted at length all the time; the forms mentioned as correct on the present record will surely be used instead, including the recommendation of the airport authority as to the use of "Montréal-Trudeau" as the current short form ("fly from Montréal-Trudeau", or "land at the Montréal-Trudeau Airport"). Even if the airport encountered many name and status changes, it never had a name that includes a comma, and had always been represented by YUL, its IATA three-letter code.
