The Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) has approved the use of Allied Signal' s enhanced ground proximity warning system(EGPWS) on all American Airlines Boeing 757 aircraft.... The new EGPWS provides a detailed map of the terrain in the vicinity of the aircraft. Using an existing navigation system, such as the Global Positioning System(GPS), the aircraft's position is correlated with a database-driven terrain map which provides the pilot with real time awareness of the aircraft's position. The moving map, which is displayed on a cockpit screen, will aid the pilot in maintaining proper altitude and terrain clearance.

Embedded GPS INS. The EGI is in an all-attitude navigation system providing outputs of linear and angular acceleration, velocity, position, attitude(roll, pitch, and platform azimuth), magnetic and true heading, altitude, time tags, and time. When installed in the host platforms in the appropriate configuration, the system provides the navigation functions of the equipment it replaces. It uses vehicle electrical power(28 Vdc), turn-on and mode commands, initialization data, and altitude data, as well as Global Positioning System(GPS) satellite inputs for GPS or GPS/Inertial Navigation System(INS) operation, and is able to track five space vehicles simultaneously.

A set of parameters which describe the location of satellites with respect to time, and which are transmitted (broadcasted) from the satellites

The broadcast ephemeris is decoded by all GPS [Global Positioning System] receivers. It contains information that allow the GPS receivers to compute the Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed(ECEF) coordinates of each of the satellites relative to the WGS84 datum. The Keplerian elements consist of positional information at a single reference time, and parameters related to the predicted rate of change in order to account for solar radiation and gravity perturbations. Periodic terms are added for argument of perigee, geocentric distance and inclination. The broadcast ephemeris is transmitted daily to the satellites via the Control Segment for future rebroadcast by the satellites.

Helmert blocking, which was developed a little over 100 years ago by F. R. Helmert (Helmert 1880) is basically a technique for breaking up a least squares adjustment problem, which is too large to be managed as a single computation, into many smaller computational tasks with potentially large savings in computer storage and CPU requirements.

For this adjustment, the blocks were named by state and every GPS [global positioning system] project was assigned to a specific state block. This resulted in some data collected in one state appearing in another state Block but prevented splitting sessions of observations and minimizing junction points. Blocks are combined two at a time, reducing the number of station coordinates to be estimated to only those stations that are associated with GPS observations belonging to other blocks. Eventually only one block remains and a solution for the coordinates of its stations can be performed.

The ROCSAT3/COSMIC(Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate) mission consists of a constellation of 6 low-earth orbiting satellites. The GPS EOW rollover occurs every 1, 024 weeks--about once every 20 years. The GPS system calculates time by counting the number of weeks since January 6, 1980--up to a maximum of 1, 023 weeks. At midnight between August 21-22, 1999, the GPS week "counter" will roll back to zero weeks. DOD says this will not create problems for the GPS satellites or DOD's GPS ground control center, but it could present a problem for consumers who use older GPS receivers and related applications. That's because after August 21, 1999, receivers could process satellite data incorrectly and display inaccurate information.

However, a clock overflow problem, called the "Z-count roll-over" does exist and is sometimes erroneously labeled as a Y2K problem. GPS measurements can be differentiated between receivers, satellites, and epochs. Although many combinations are possible, the present convention for differential processing of GPS phase measurements is to take differences between receivers(single difference), then between satellites(double difference), then between measurement epochs(tripe difference). A single difference measurement between receivers is the instantaneous difference in phase of the signal from the same satellite, measured by two receivers simultaneously. A double difference measurement is obtained by differentiating the single difference for one satellite with respect to the corresponding single difference for a chosen reference satellite. A tripe difference measurement is the difference between a double difference at one epoch of time and the same double difference at the previous epoch of time.
