The Indian-meal moth has a wing-spread of about 2 centimetres. The forewings are creamy white next to the body, and have a reddish-brown colour with a coppery lustre on the outer two-thirds. The female moth lays about 200 eggs, either singly or in groups, on food material. The larvae are dirty white in colour, often with a greenish or pinkish tint. The newly hatched larvae are almost never seen because of their small size and the fact that they burrow as far as two metres into the grain mass. They normally remain in the grain until they have completed their larval growth. When fully grown they are about 1.2 centimetres long. In summer their life cycle is about six weeks. 1, record 12, English, - indian%2Dmeal%20moth
Record number: 12, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The Indian-meal moth is cosmopolitan in distribution, feeding on stored grain as well as nuts, dried fruits and packaged cereals. The principal damage caused to wheat is to the germ : a single larva may destroy the germ of approximately 50 kernels in completing its development. Degermed kernels reduce the grade and produce flour inferior in baking quality. 1, record 12, English, - indian%2Dmeal%20moth

2, record 12, French, - pyrale%20indienne%20de%20la%20farine
Record number: 12, Textual support number: 1 OBS
2, record 12, French, - pyrale%20indienne%20de%20la%20farine

Because of the importance of standard samples, great care is taken in their preparation. Quantities of grain sufficient to prepare standard samples of each grade are obtained from primary elevators and from rail cars unloading at terminal elevators. About 50 tonnes are collected and sent annually to the Commission's Inspection Division. The samples are representative of the major grading factors peculiar to that crop and of a cross-section of all production areas. 2, record 28, French, - grades%20et%20caract%C3%A9ristiques

The Grain Inventory Accounting System(GIAS) is a computer based system of grain accounting that replaces hard copy elevator receipt documentation. Prior to the development of GIAS, grain accounting was a paper-based system which relied on the terminal elevator receipt document to be representative of the stocks in store at a terminal. As the status of the grain changed(i. e., grade changes, blending, drying, etc.), like changes had to be made to the document(s) representing that grain. There was also the possibility of losing the hard copy document. Under GIAS, all transactions are done electronically; there are no lost documents; inventory records are manipulated as soon as the physical stocks of grain are manipulated and the elevator operators are able to keep their in-house accounting current. 2, record 35, English, - Grain%20Inventory%20Accounting%20System

The grade assigned to a parcel of grain is only as representative of the quality of that grain as the sample taken for grading. It is, therefore, very important that the sample be truly representative of the complete parcel. Most grain officially inspected on entry or discharge from a terminal elevator is officially sampled by an automatic sampler installed and operated under supervision of the Commission's Inspection Division. The automatic sampler is a mechanical device that takes a representative sample from a stream of grain moving on a belt or through a spout. Where there are no automatic samplers, samples are taken by hand scoops or dipper samplers. 1, record 47, English, - sampling%20method

Two basic grain grading systems are in use throughout the world : the fair average quality system and the numerical system. The numerical system is the more common system. It separates grain into divisions of quality defined by grading factors. Each division is identified by a grade name or number and grain is bought and sold on the basis of these grades. Buyers obtain the specific quality desired by selecting the grain by grade name and number. In some grading systems, such as Canada's, a certificate of grade is acceptable to an importer, and no additional samples are required as evidence of quality. In other systems, importers demand additional safeguards, such as a sample, together with analytical details of the actual grain being shipped. 1, record 53, English, - numerical%20system

1, record 53, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20num%C3%A9rique

However, statutory grades defined in Schedule 1 of the Canadian Grain Act cannot be established, amended or eleted, except by Order of the Governor in Council on the Commission's recommendation. These statutory grades are the keystone of the Canadian grading system. They cover most grades sold domestically or for export, and are recognized and accepted by all purchasers of Canadian grain. Stones(in all grains) include hard shale, coal, hard earth pellets, hard fertilizer pellets(except when found in domestic mustard seed) or other non-toxic materials of similar consistency. Any such material that is readily removable by ordinary cleaning methods is assessed as dockage. If a No. 6 buckwheat sieve or a No. 316 slotted sieve is used for special cleaning, the material removed may be assessed as dockage(see "Special cleaning" in the dockage assessment sections for each grain in this Guide). Grade tolerances established in this Guide are for material classed as stones which is not separable. Tolerances are normally expressed in number of stones per 500 grams. The "Index-grain apparatus"(...) is a sedimentation device in which the free fall of grains is slowed by three nozzle-like constrictions which cause turbulence that results in better grading of the grains. In order to distinguish between the single grain fractions which settle in a graduated, conical, water-filled sedimentation vessel, a colored index set of three known grain fractions is added to the sediment before separation : 1 cmthree black grains in the grade 0. 02-0. 035 mm 1 cmthree red grains in the grade 0. 063-0. 11 mm 1 cmthree black grains in the grade 0. 2-0. 35 mm(...) The suspension with the added index set is poured into the filling tube, which is closed from below with a float stopper. The stopper is opened by squeezing a rubber bulb on the filling tube, and the suspension can immediately enter the lower sedimentation tube. The filling tube has a constriction that generates turbulence. The grains therefore enter the sedimentation tube pregraded. By multiplying the percentage volumes of the individual grades(minus the added colored index grains of each grade) by the average bulk density [(gamma]=1. 56), the weight-percentages of the individual grades are calculated on the basis of 100% dry material. 1, record 76, English, - Index%2Dgrain%20apparatus

1, record 76, French, - appareil%20%C3%A0%20grains%20color%C3%A9s%20comparateurs
