In 1960 the Canadian Lumber Standards(CLS) was created to fulfill a need to create standardization and to build integrity into the grade stamping of lumber. CLS was a division of the Canadian Standards Association(CSA) an ISO certified body, until 1982. Although CLS continues to derive its authority, mandate and structure from this ISO certified body, in February of 1982 CLS was re-organized as the Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board(CLSAB), a non-profit corporation under Letters Patent with the Federal Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs of Canada. The CLSAB polices the administration of the Special Product Standards & Grade Rules.

Les règles de classement adoptées par la National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) sont habituellement considérées comme la norme à suivre par les fabricants canadiens de feuillus de catégories «Usage industriel». La meilleure classe de cette catégorie se nomme «Premiers» (First) et la suivante «Seconds» (Seconds). Premiers et seconds sont normalement vendus en mélange sous l'appellation FAS. La troisième classe est appelée «Choix» (Selects), suivie d'un des qualificatifs suivants : No. 1 Commun, No. 2 Commun, No. 3A Commun ou No. 3B Commun.
