Any operation involving the excavation or construction of earth embankments.

Earthmoving. This includes excavation and the placement of earth fill. Excavation follows preparation of the site, and is performed when the existing grade must be brought down to a new elevation.

General excavation consists of the primary operations of earth excavation, rock excavation, backfill, and embankment construction; it also includes the transportation of earth materials, the stabilization of earth banks, and the control of ground water.

OBS

General excavation is the term quite generally applied to the moving of portions of the earth’s crust for construction purposes. Other terms, such as earthmoving, may or may not mean the same thing. Confusion arises from the dual use of the word "earth" to refer, on the one hand, to the sphere on which we live, and on the other hand to that portion of the earth’s crust often termed "dirt," but now more frequently termed "soil."

... the handling of municipal solid waste through a new and innovative European technology known as the piped vacuum collection system. Whereas the traditional infrastructure approach involves household garbage pickup, separation, and landfill costs, this scenario allows household waste to be sorted at source. Separate waste streams are conveyed to storage locations in vacuum chutes running through the below grade service level to a central, underground location for pickup. Recyclables and non-organic waste are picked up from the storage location by the municipality. Organics are conveyed directly to anaerobic digestion tanks situated throughout the site.

In the below-ground vault option, the major characteristics are that :-wastes are placed below grade in a reinforced-concrete vault in a suitable hydrogeological site;-the vault is covered with a thick concrete roof, covered in turn by a thick layer of earth;-structural stability is provided by the facility itself;-the voids between the waste packages may be filled with sand or the wastes may be compacted by heavy equipment and-no additional engineered barriers are required.
