CONT

Factory(Shop) grades. Traditionally softwood lumber used for cuttings has been termed Factory or Shop. This lumber forms the basic raw material for many secondary manufacturing operations. Some grading associations refer to cutting grades as Factory while others refer to Shop. All impose a somewhat similar nomenclature in the grade structure. Factory Select and Select Shop are typical high grades, followed by No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 Shop.

OBS

In 1960 the Canadian Lumber Standards(CLS) was created to fulfill a need to create standardization and to build integrity into the grade stamping of lumber. CLS was a division of the Canadian Standards Association(CSA) an ISO certified body, until 1982. Although CLS continues to derive its authority, mandate and structure from this ISO certified body, in February of 1982 CLS was re-organized as the Canadian Lumber Standards Accreditation Board(CLSAB), a non-profit corporation under Letters Patent with the Federal Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs of Canada. The CLSAB polices the administration of the Special Product Standards & Grade Rules.

A level spreader is an outlet constructed at zero grade across the slope consisting of a vegetated or mechanical structure used to disperse or "spread" concentrated flow thinly over a receiving area. Its purpose is to spread collected water over a wide enough area so that erosion of the receiving area does not result.

Subject field(s)
  • Nuclear Waste Materials
  • Waste Management
DEF

An engineered concrete structure located above natural grade that is closed by placement of a concrete cover and that is provided with vertical access(through an open top) for placement of the radioactive waste.

CONT

Figure 8 outlines the above-ground vault option. Its main elements include: . wastes disposed of above grade; . an engineered concrete cover over the wastes; . structural stability provided by the walls and cross-walls of the facility; and . voids between containerized wastes filled with nonstructural material (bulk wastes are placed in the vault, uncompacted, by an enclosed-conveyor materials handling system through holes in the roof). One major reason for building an above-ground vault is that it allows for constant surveillance. ... Since any such facility would be exposed to the elements, natural decay would be a problem and constant maintenance would be required.

CONT

Aboveground vault disposal consists of placing the waste in engineered concrete structures located above natural grade. A vault is completely closed by placement of a concrete roof over each backfilled cell. The facility lacks any earthen cover system and relies principally on the structure to isolate the waste from the biosphere.

CONT

... the aboveground vault is a large steel-reinforced concrete structure with vertical access (through an open top) for placement of the waste. Within each structure there are numerous disposal units. Each disposal unit is sealed when filled to capacity. Individual units are sized to accommodate waste deliveries for about 1 to 2 weeks.

CONT

... it would be undesirable to place the AGV directly on shield bedrock where radionuclides could be washed into fissures and cracks which would be difficult to monitor or control.

DEF

(grade) A degree of inclination, or a rate of ascent or descent, with respect to the horizontal, of a road, railroad, embankment, conduit, or other engineering structure; it is expressed as a ratio(vertical to horizontal), a fraction(such as m/km or ft/mi), or a percentage(of horizontal distance).

DEF

(gradient) The degree of slope of a pipe invert or road or land surface. Often expressed as a ratio (3:1, 6:1) in feet or meters, or as a percentage (2%, 30%). The gradient is a measurement of the slope height as related to its base.

CONT

Slopes or gradients are expressed as a ratio of the length of rise to the length of run; for example, 1:10 is the same as 10 per cent and 1:50 is the same as 2 per cent.

French

Domaine(s)

DEF

CONT

Pentes.

Classroom organizational structure which consists of deliberate mixing of age and grade levels within a single classroom. It has also been referred to as multiage or family grouping... This structure allows teachers to work with students over a two year period or longer and enables students to progress at individual rates without obvious remediation or special programs for acceleration. It is believed that this method of grouping youngsters can provide maximum opportunities to meet the needs of individual students.

A schematic diagram of a modular concrete canister disposal (MCCD) facility is shown in Figure 5.5. Modular concrete canister disposal consists of placing individual waste containers in modular concrete structures (i.e. overpacking the individual waste containers in concrete canisters) and disposing of the concrete canisters in shallow low trenches below natural grade. Except for the use of the concrete canisters, the physical details of belowground modular concrete canister disposal closely resemble those of shallow land disposal (in that disposal is below grade with shallow cover) and belowground vaults (in that structured capability is also provided by the facility).

CONT

Modular concrete canister disposal. Figure 11 shows the canister disposal option. Its main characteristics are that :. wastes are placed in concrete canisters that can then be placed either in shallow, below-grade trenches or above grade on a concrete pad;. there is a shallow earthen cover over the waste trenches containing the canisters(earth or soil may be mounded over the canisters in the above-ground version) ;. structural stability is provided by each canister;. the structure is modular in nature; and. safety may be enhanced in future by additional engineered barriers.
