... form of military commission formerly used in the [United States(U. S.) ] and British armies. Under the system in which an officer was customarily promoted within his regiment or corps, a brevet conferred upon him a rank in the army at large higher than that held in his corps. Frequently it carried with it the pay, right to command, and uniform of the higher grade. In the United States especially, brevet rank was widely bestowed as a reward for outstanding service; it became the subject of extensive confusion and controversy during the American Civil War. After 1865, U. S. brevet rank was gradually stripped of its benefits, and officers were rewarded instead by decorations. 2, record 2, English, - brevet%20rank

A rotating foil produces a series of pressure and vacuum pulses to keep the perforations clean. Knots are retained on the entrance side of the screen and are continuously discharged, along with some good fiber. The main drawback of the pressure knotter is the requirement for secondary screening of the reject stream to return good fiber back to the system. 1, record 4, English, - pressure%20screen%20knotter

1, record 4, French, - trieur%20de%20n%26oelig%3Buds%20sous%20pression

Record number: 10, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The simplest form of engineered trench, or shallow land burial, relies mainly on the properties of the excavated overburden and the geohydrologic properties of the site for containment. The intent is to ensure that the travel time of radionuclides from the waste to the human environment via groundwater is long compared to the nuclide half lives. Travel time is long because of low hydraulic gradients, soils of low water permeability and high contaminant adsorption, and lengthy pathways across exclusion zones. 4, record 10, English, - trench
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Illustration of a shallow land burial facility(engineered trench).... Figure 9 outlines the engineered trench option. In this option, the major characteristics are that :. wastes are placed below grade(in suitable hydrogeological conditions) in trenches having a specially prepared bottom that incorporates a drainage system;. there is an earthen cover over the wastes that easily can incorporate additional engineered barriers;. structural stability is not provided by the disposal facility; and. for structural stability, voids between the waste containers are filled with sans or earthen materials-bulk wastes may be compacted. 5, record 10, English, - trench
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 3 CONT
Shallow-land burial in trenches was the original low-level waste disposal practice at the beginning of the nuclear era. The method originally consisted in emplacing the wastes in trenches dug into the ground at depths ranging from 3 to 6 m and covering the emplaced wastes with about 1 m of soil. 1, record 10, English, - trench
Record number: 10, Textual support number: 4 CONT
Burial trenches without additional engineered barriers can be used provided that radionuclides will migrate into groundwater beneath the site at an acceptable rate. 1, record 10, English, - trench

As used in this context, the word "engineered" refers to the fact that features and materials have been designed or selected to accomplish certain functions. In shallow land burial the materials are usually natural rather than man-made. 4, record 10, English, - trench

The Grain Inventory Accounting System(GIAS) is a computer based system of grain accounting that replaces hard copy elevator receipt documentation. Prior to the development of GIAS, grain accounting was a paper-based system which relied on the terminal elevator receipt document to be representative of the stocks in store at a terminal. As the status of the grain changed(i. e., grade changes, blending, drying, etc.), like changes had to be made to the document(s) representing that grain. There was also the possibility of losing the hard copy document. Under GIAS, all transactions are done electronically; there are no lost documents; inventory records are manipulated as soon as the physical stocks of grain are manipulated and the elevator operators are able to keep their in-house accounting current. 2, record 21, English, - Grain%20Inventory%20Accounting%20System

1, record 23, French, - %C3%A9tape%20de%20Baker

Paste backfill is defined as an engineered mixture of fine solid particles (with binder) and water, containing between 72% and 85% solids by weight. Particles in a paste mixture will not settle out of the mixture if allowed to remain stationary in a tank or in a pipeline. It can be placed in stopes with or without binder addition depending on the strength requirements for backfill. Improved pumping technology, environmental concerns and the need for a low cost/high strength fill in mines are driving mine operators to consider paste backfill as a tailings management and mine backfill alternative. The main advantages and disadvantages of a paste backfill system over a conventional hydraulic backfill plant are generally accepted as: ... higher strengths can be achieved with an equivalent cement content; drainage of water and slimes from the fill are minimized, reducing the need for bulkhead construction and extensive drainage works. This feature also reduces maintenance on sumps and mine de-watering pumps; in some cases, unclassified tailings can be used to make paste rather than just the coarse fraction as is the case for hydraulic backfill; shorter stope cycle times can be achieved because an equivalent strength can be achieved in a shorter time with paste backfill; paste backfill systems achieve lower porosities than conventional fill thereby increasing the tonnage of material that can be disposed of underground; and, since paste backfill is deposited as a non-segregated mass of backfill (because cement particles are not displaced by the internal movements of the draining water), more predictable strength properties for the fill can be achieved. 2, record 27, English, - paste%20backfilling%20system

Paste backfilling of mines. A number of mines are installing paste fill systems to replace the current sand fill method. The justification and economies of this conversion include : higher production levels(less wait for dewatering), increased grade of ore to the mill, decrease of stope ore left as pillars, improved haulage with the removal of excess moisture, increased filling rates, and a higher strength fill with less waiting time. The unique problems associated with paste fill applications range from extremely rapid system wear to paste separation and system blockage. 3, record 27, English, - paste%20backfilling%20system

Remblayage. 2, record 27, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20de%20remblayage%20par%20p%C3%A2te

The percentages of flours which make up commercial grades are called flour divides. A divide board or box containing a system of valves is used to make the various combinations required. The basic streams, A, B, C and D flow into the top of the board, and are split into proportions required for blending into the commercial grades. The miller maintains the required divide of the basic flour streams with flour weighers located downstream. As each commercial grade of flour has a different value, it is important for maximum profitability to keep the divides consistent. 1, record 32, English, - commercial%20grade

The flours produced at different stages in the milling process are known as "machine flours" and are named after the stage in the process where they are produced. Thus, flour from the third break passage is designated 3 BK flour. Flour from the first reduction passage(removed by the first middlings sifter) is designated 1 M flour, from the second middlings sifter, 2 M flour, and so on to the last passage which is called low grade(LG) flour. The reduction system also includes passages for treating the coarser, branny stocks known as second quality and first tailings; the flours produced at these stages are designated 2Q and 1T flours respectively. Two basic grain grading systems are in use throughout the world : the fair average quality system and the numerical system. The numerical system is the more common system. It separates grain into divisions of quality defined by grading factors. Each division is identified by a grade name or number and grain is bought and sold on the basis of these grades. Buyers obtain the specific quality desired by selecting the grain by grade name and number. In some grading systems, such as Canada's, a certificate of grade is acceptable to an importer, and no additional samples are required as evidence of quality. In other systems, importers demand additional safeguards, such as a sample, together with analytical details of the actual grain being shipped. 1, record 41, English, - numerical%20system

1, record 41, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20num%C3%A9rique

The Standards Committees are also responsible for recommending grade specifications to the Commission. However, statutory grades defined in Schedule 1 of the Canadian Grain Act cannot be established, amended or eleted, except by Order of the Governor in Council on the Commission's recommendation. These statutory grades are the keystone of the Canadian grading system. They cover most grades sold domestically or for export, and are recognized and accepted by all purchasers of Canadian grain. Grade definitions are changed only after thorough research and investigation has firmly established that such changes would increase the acceptability of Canadian grain in world markets. 2, record 42, English, - statutory%20grade

2, record 42, French, - grade%20r%C3%A9glementaire

A double tempering system is preferable for conditioning prior to milling. Unlike hard red spring wheats, the time required to bring sound, good quality durum to optimum milling condition is only five to six hours. Longer periods cause pigment changes resulting in loss of colour in the semolina and the pasta end product. It should be emphasized, however, that this tempering time may vary depending on the quality of durum wheat. A poor grade containing a high percentage of white grains absorbs moisture quickly and may require no more than three hours tempering time. Durum wheat is usually milled at a moisture content of approximately 16% to yield semolina at 14% moisture content. 1, record 43, English, - double%20tempering%20system

1, record 43, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20%C3%A0%20double%20conditionnement

Illustration of a shallow land burial facility(engineered trench).... Figure 9 outlines the engineered trench option. In this option, the major characteristics are that : wastes are placed below grade(in suitable hydrogeological conditions) in trenches having a specially prepared bottom that incorporates a drainage system; there is an earthen cover over the wastes that easily can incorporate additional engineered barriers; structural stability is not provided by the disposal facility; and for structural stability, voids between the waste containers are filled with sand or earthen materials-bulk wastes may be compacted. 1, record 51, English, - shallow%20land%20burial%20facility
