Canada maintains the quality of Canadian grain in the system through the Canadian quality assurance system, which starts with variety registration before the grain is produced and enters the bulk handling system, and continues with various quality control mechanisms in the system such as inspections and grading standards and procedures. These quality control mechanisms applied to Canadian grain ensure that end-users get a consistent quality of grain from year-to-year and shipment-to-shipment. Because of this quality assurance system, the grades assigned to the grain serve to identify the quality, origin and end-use characteristics of the grain. It is also for this reason that Eastern grain and Western grain are handled separately in the system. 2, record 11, English, - Canadian%20quality%20assurance%20system

3, record 11, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20canadien%20d%27assurance%20de%20la%20qualit%C3%A9

Most factors considered in grading must be determined by visual examination. For the sake of comparison to assist in grading, or to set grading levels, standard samples are prepared annually for all grain grades defined in Schedule 1 of the act and for any other special grades established by the Commission. All standard samples are prepared by the Commission's Inspection Division. They are submitted for review to the Grain Standards Committees, which recommend to the Commission that standard samples for different grades be approved. The main storage bins are usually hoppered and an automatic conveying system moves the grain to intermediate storage bins from which different grades are blended into the milling grist. The main storage bins are arranged to feed back into the intake elevator to provide for turning over the grain from one bin to another. This turning over is sometimes necessary to keep the grain in sound condition. Provision is also made for drying grain. A grain storage must be adequate to satisfy, at least-cost, the variable inputs and outputs. This, however, may require very high capital and running costs. Once again, optimum storage size is one that minimizes the sum of waiting costs and storage costs. Numerous factors such as number of loading points, seasonal variations(due to weather and other reasons) in arrival of shipments, and variety of grades imported must all be considered. Two basic grain grading systems are in use throughout the world : the fair average quality system and the numerical system. The numerical system is the more common system. It separates grain into divisions of quality defined by grading factors. Each division is identified by a grade name or number and grain is bought and sold on the basis of these grades. Buyers obtain the specific quality desired by selecting the grain by grade name and number. In some grading systems, such as Canada's, a certificate of grade is acceptable to an importer, and no additional samples are required as evidence of quality. In other systems, importers demand additional safeguards, such as a sample, together with analytical details of the actual grain being shipped. 1, record 27, English, - numerical%20system

1, record 27, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20num%C3%A9rique

The Standards Committees are also responsible for recommending grade specifications to the Commission. However, statutory grades defined in Schedule 1 of the Canadian Grain Act cannot be established, amended or eleted, except by Order of the Governor in Council on the Commission's recommendation. These statutory grades are the keystone of the Canadian grading system. They cover most grades sold domestically or for export, and are recognized and accepted by all purchasers of Canadian grain. 2, record 29, French, - grade%20r%C3%A9glementaire

for "saw cut veneer" : Veneers are cut in two grades or thicknesses, known as saw cut and knife cut. The first named are the thickest, and vary in thickness from 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch. They are cut from the log with a large circular saw, and usually yield about 12 sheets to the inch. Knife cut veneers are much thinner, modern machines making it possible to get from 50 to 100 sheets to the inch, the very thin ones being used as picture mounts. These are cut with rotary and flat knives. In saw cutting the log is well steamed and placed between two stocks, like a leg in a lathe, and under a knife for its whole length. The log is now forced round and against the knife which drops the required thickness at each revolution. By cutting spirally the grain is accentuated and enlarged. 3, record 47, English, - sawn%20veneer

The "Index-grain apparatus"(...) is a sedimentation device in which the free fall of grains is slowed by three nozzle-like constrictions which cause turbulence that results in better grading of the grains. In order to distinguish between the single grain fractions which settle in a graduated, conical, water-filled sedimentation vessel, a colored index set of three known grain fractions is added to the sediment before separation : 1 cmthree black grains in the grade 0. 02-0. 035 mm 1 cmthree red grains in the grade 0. 063-0. 11 mm 1 cmthree black grains in the grade 0. 2-0. 35 mm(...) The suspension with the added index set is poured into the filling tube, which is closed from below with a float stopper. The stopper is opened by squeezing a rubber bulb on the filling tube, and the suspension can immediately enter the lower sedimentation tube. The filling tube has a constriction that generates turbulence. The grains therefore enter the sedimentation tube pregraded. By multiplying the percentage volumes of the individual grades(minus the added colored index grains of each grade) by the average bulk density [(gamma]=1. 56), the weight-percentages of the individual grades are calculated on the basis of 100% dry material. 1, record 49, English, - Index%2Dgrain%20apparatus

1, record 49, French, - appareil%20%C3%A0%20grains%20color%C3%A9s%20comparateurs
