What the hydrostatic balance is implying is that the vertical motion upwards is equal to the downward motion of gravity. In other words there is a net zero motion in the vertical direction. 3, record 1, English, - hydrostatic%20balance
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Air does not rush off into space because the upward-directed pressure gradient force is nearly always balanced by the downward force of gravity. When these two forces are in exact balance, the air is said to be in hydrostatic equilibrium. 2, record 1, English, - hydrostatic%20balance

Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
2, record 1, French, - %C3%A9quilibre%20hydrostatique

In the real atmosphere, winds will resemble the geostrophic wind only in regions where the pressure gradient is uniform(i. e. isobars on weather map are straight, parallel to each other). Often, when isobars are curved or when they converge/diverge..., the real wind will be faster than(super-geostrophic) or slower than(sub-geostrophic) winds resulting from gestrophic balance. 2, record 3, English, - subgeostrophic%20wind

Another very clever way-out was pioneered by the blind physicist Plateau already in the XIX century : the isodense tank(Plateau tank) with an immiscible liquid to balance the(high) hydrostatic gradient. But on both cases(millimetric-size liquid bridges and Plateau simulation) the mechanical behaviour(statics and dynamics) of liquid bridges is difficult to investigate under ground conditions because both techniques make experimentation difficult, imprecise and can mask effects only measurable under reduced gravity conditions. That explains why so many experiments with liquid bridges have been performed under microgravity since the pioneering demonstrations in Skylab in 1974, and how different the real behaviour of liquid bridges in space has been found. 2, record 4, English, - Plateau%20tank
