CHAMPS is a modular microgravity research furnace developed for the National Research Council' s Space Division. It was flown in a Get-Away-Special(GAS) container aboard the space shuttle STS-67 in June 1993 to investigate GaAs [gallium arsenide] crystal growth by liquid phase electroepitaxy(LPEE). Combining the advantages of both dedicated and generic experimental facilities, CHAMPS allows investigators to specify their own experimental configuration while at the same time providing them with generic peripherals. Configurable hardware included thermal and gradient furnace, levitator, etc., while generic peripherals included control and data acquisition, thermal insulation, and ground support equipment. 2, record 2, English, - configurable%20hardware%20for%20multidisciplinary%20projects%20in%20space

Gravity gradient stabilisation uses the principle that a body in orbit around the Earth will tend to rotate about it’s centre of mass, as each part of the body will tend to follow it’s own orbit. La stabilisation par gradient de gravité, consiste à placer une masse liée à une altitude légèrement supérieure en utilisant le fait qu'à cet endroit, la force centrifuge est légèrement supérieure à l'attraction terrestre (et inversement pour une distance moindre). Space Based Detectors. Ground based interferometers are limited at the low frequency end by the practical difficulties of operating on Earth : the increasing difficulty of vibration isolation at lower frequencies, the effects of the curvature of the Earth for longer baseline detectors, and the expense of longer vacuum systems. There is also the fundamental difficulty of gravity gradient noise... The obvious solution to these specific difficulties is to use an interferometric detector in space. Interferometer arms may be made orders of magnitude longer than is practical on Earth. 6, record 4, English, - interferometric%20detector

6, record 4, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20interf%C3%A9rom%C3%A9trique

Advanced Gradient Heating Facility (AGHF) ... The AGHF supports the production of advanced semiconductor materials and alloys using the directional solidification process, which depends on establishing a hot side and a cold side in the sample (a temperature gradient). It provides an extremely stable temperature environment of up to 1,400°C, high-temperature gradients of up to 100°C/cm in the solidification zone, slow movement of the gradient across a sample to provide slow growth rates, efficient cooling through the use of a liquid metal cooling ring attached to the sample container, and Peltier pulse marking capability. The AGHF consists of three modules mounted in one side of a Spacelab double rack: the Core Facility Module contains the processing chamber with the furnace inside; the Electronics Module contains the controls and equipment necessary to operate the furnace; and the Gas Storage Module contains argon for chamber repressurization and sample cooling. 2, record 6, English, - advanced%20gradient%20heating%20facility

Another very clever way-out was pioneered by the blind physicist Plateau already in the XIX century : the isodense tank(Plateau tank) with an immiscible liquid to balance the(high) hydrostatic gradient. But on both cases(millimetric-size liquid bridges and Plateau simulation) the mechanical behaviour(statics and dynamics) of liquid bridges is difficult to investigate under ground conditions because both techniques make experimentation difficult, imprecise and can mask effects only measurable under reduced gravity conditions. That explains why so many experiments with liquid bridges have been performed under microgravity since the pioneering demonstrations in Skylab in 1974, and how different the real behaviour of liquid bridges in space has been found. 2, record 8, English, - Plateau%20tank
