The Dimension 3000 Scanning Probe Microscope(SPM) encompasses several techniques for studying surface properties of materials at the atomic to micron scale. It measures surface structure and produces images with three-dimensional information. It measures surface roughness and maps the surface based on atomic force, friction, magnetic field, relative stiffness, or electric field gradient. Typical applications : 1. Studying surface of optical components(especially mirrors) [;] 2. Mapping of magnetic properties of tapes[;] 3. Measuring surface pit depth and width. Mode of operation : An atomically sharp tip, held at the end of a cantilever, is scanned in a regular pattern across a surface. As the tip probes the surface, the interaction between the surface and tip is measured using a laser-based system. 3, record 4, English, - scanning%20probe%20microscope

Free products and dissolved petroleum components from the surface of the contaminated aquifer are captured and treated via multi-phase extraction & treatment. Bioslurping induces a horizontal vacuum gradient on the targeted monitor/recovery wells through a slurp tube which is inserted into each well. Product and groundwater are entrained in droplet form in a high velocity air stream and brought to the surface for treatment. Following air/liquid separation the liquid phase is treated by a combination of oil/water separation, air stripping, and liquid phase carbon treatment before being discharged. The off-gas is treated(if necessary) by vapour phase carbon treatment. The advantages of multi-phase extraction & treatment include : a high product to groundwater extraction ratio; aeration of the vadose zone which enhances natural biodegradation of the hydrocarbon contaminants; all treatment components may be housed in a turn-key mobile remedial unit; a simple product recovery technology which can be transferred to conventional remedial applications such as pump and treat, sparging and vapour extraction system(VES) applications. Calhoun performed clogging tests to determine the degree of fabric clogging that might be experienced by fabric in contact with a gap-graded soil. The clogging test employed a permeameter device... Hydraulic gradient data from the soil-fabric permeameters were analyzed to determine the clogging potential of a fabric. The analysis made use of a ratio of the hydraulic gradient across the fabric plus an adjacent 1 in. of soil to the hydraulic gradient for the entire system, that is, the "clogging ratio. Significant temperature gradients are present across the fuel particles when a nuclear reactor is producing power. Up until now the envelope equations have been written for a laterally unbounded system. The presence of side boundaries that confine the system can modify the instability mechanism. For example, in convection, viscous friction at a lateral wall increases the damping, which inhibits the instability. By contrast, a thermal perturbation in the wall or simply a difference of thermal conductivity between the fluid and the wall, can build up a horizontal temperature gradient that may induce a fluid motion, thus encouraging the instability. In both cases, we expect lateral boundary effects to impose modulations and act as boundary conditions on the envelope. 1, record 13, English, - lateral%20boundary%20effect

1, record 13, French, - effet%20de%20paroi%20lat%C3%A9rale

A hypothetical mechanism for coupling electron transfer to ATP synthesis... proposed in 1961 by Peter Mitchell [who] suggested that the flow of electrons through the system of carrier molecules drives positively charged hydrogen ions, or protons, across the membranes of chloroplasts, mitochondria and bacterial cells. As a result an electrochemical proton gradient is created across the membrane.... The synthesis of ATP is driven by a reverse flow of protons down the gradient. 3, record 17, English, - chemiosmotic%20theory
