A veering wind is a wind that turns clockwise with height. An example of a veering wind would be a southeast wind at the surface and a west wind at 700 millibars. The wind turns in the same direction as a clock from the surface to 700 millibars. A veering wind is associated with warm air advection and dynamic lifting... The magnitude of warm air advection is a function of wind speed and the pre-existing thermal gradient. Weak winds will result in weak advection. Winds often veer ahead of cold fronts(in the warm sector of a mid-latitude cyclone). 2, record 1, English, - veering%20wind

Whereas the seasonal pycnocline disappears every winter, the permanent pycnocline is always present in [the subpolar regions]. The vertical density gradient in the main pycnocline is very strong, and the turbulence within the upper mixed layer induced by the air-sea exchanges of wind and heat cannot overcome the great stability of the main pycnocline to penetrate into the deeper ocean. The stability of the main pycnocline acts as a barrier against turbulent mixing processes, and beneath this depth the water has not had contact with the surface for a very long time. 2, record 2, English, - permanent%20pycnocline

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The jet stream is a fragmented global wind flow that encircles the mid-latitudes in a wavelike pattern. Embedded within this global wind belt are jet streaks. A jet streak is a segment of the jet stream that has relatively high velocity winds.... Jet streaks are caused by a large low-level temperature gradient, thus they are more intense in the cool season when the differential in temperature between the polar regions and tropical regions is largest. Jet streaks are analyzed near the 300-mb level. 4, record 3, English, - jet%20streak
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT
Some authors consider "jet stream core" and "core of the jet stream" synonyms with "jet streak." In fact, a "jet stream core" is "a line, within the jet stream, along which the wind speeds are maximum both in the vertical and horizontal." The "jet streak" is a "segment within the jet stream core where the wind reaches its greatest speed." There could be more than one "jet streak" within a "jet stream core." The French equivalent of "jet stream core" is "coeur du courant-jet." 7, record 3, English, - jet%20streak

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Gap winds can range in width from hundreds of feet to over one hundred miles, and in unusual circumstances can be associated with strong winds exceeding 50 knots. These winds are normally quite shallow, extending hundreds of feet to a few thousand feet above the surface, with large changes of wind, or wind shear, at their upper and lateral boundaries. Gap winds are generally strongest when there is a large pressure drop across a gap, although there is one class of gap wind that does not depend on a pressure gradient across the gap. 3, record 4, English, - gap%20wind
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Although physicially plausible, the venturi mechanism appears to be at odds with most real gap wind situations, where the strongest winds are generally over the exit region of the gap, not at the narrowest section or constriction. There are a number of reasons for the failure of the funnel model. First, there is no rigid lid in the real world.... Another reason the flow tend to be strongest in the gap exit region is that there is often a synoptic or mesoscale pressure gradient across the gap. 4, record 4, English, - gap%20wind

[The term "gap wind"] was introduced by R. S. Scorer (1952) for the surface winds blowing through the Strait of Gibraltar. ...
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 2 OBS

If the strong horizontal temperature gradient associated with a front maintains a near constant direction through a deep layer of the atmosphere, the thermal wind component will have a constant direction through successively higher layers. As this component is added consecutively to the actual wind at each level, the wind will increase markedly with height. This is how the very strong winds of frontal jet streams originate. 1, record 5, English, - frontal%20jet%20stream

In the turbulent under-laminar air layer, more or less visible roll shaped clouds(cumulus or stratocumulus) mark the different waves. When the air moisture content is high, bands of clouds which vary in thickness and length form parallel to the relief. When the air moisture content is low, they disappear completely or are limited to very mobile and short-living light clouds. These clouds are known as rotor clouds or roll clouds. Below the roll clouds, pilots will more than likely experience strong turbulence and winds opposite to the wind gradient, which can make flying generally much more interesting and perhaps hazardous. 2, record 17, English, - rotor%20clouds

To accomplish an approximate gradient wind calculation that depends only on the pressure field, a cruder approximation for the cross-isobaric component is required. One such approach is to use the relationship between Kp(curvature of the isobars) and Kx to infer the tendency for the flow to straighten. As Kp gets closer to and surpasses Kx, we can think in terms of introducing a stronger and stronger "dissipation" mechanism, which would prevent the curvature of the flow, K from ever reaching Kx. 1, record 22, English, - curvature%20of%20the%20isobars
