The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 5, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

Electrospray ionization(ESI) is a technique to generate ions for mass spectrometry using electrospray by applying a high voltage to a liquid to produce an aerosol.... ESI overcomes the tendency of [the] molecules to fragment upon ionization.... ESI applies a high voltage at the outlet of the capillary, and the high electric field generated atomizes the liquid flowing out of the capillary into tiny charged droplets. As the solvent evaporates, the charge intensity on the surface of the droplet gradually increases, and finally the droplet splits into one or a plurality of charged ions, allowing the analyte to enter the gas phase in the form of a single charge or multiple charges and become a gas phase ion. 1, record 10, English, - electrospray%20ionization

A key difference between APCI [atmospheric pressure chemical ionization] and ESI is that ESI is based on ions that are formed in solution, whereas APCI uses ions that are formed in the gas phase. 4, record 10, English, - electrospray%20ionization

The strength-training benefits of paddles depend largely on a swimmer's awareness of hand speed. If a hand paddle increases the area of the swimmer's propulsive surface, and the swimmer moves the hand with the paddle at the same speed as without the paddle, the swimmer will generate more propulsion. However, because of the larger surface area, a swimmer will naturally move the hand through the water more slowly with the paddle than without at first. The strength-training benefit depends on the swimmer gradually increasing the hand speed when wearing paddles. 2, record 13, English, - hand%20paddle

Large eddy simulations of wind farms are often performed with canonical atmospheric conditions, where the background flow is based on precursor simulations with idealized model setups yielding statistically stationary turbulent flows. However, precursor simulations can only handle gradually changing flow conditions, and are not capable of modelling highly transient and statistically non-stationary flows, e. g. frontal passages or large gusts. Such flows frequently occur in nature, and can influence the operation—and potentially design—of wind turbines. 2, record 22, English, - background%20flow

Box nets can be fished at any time in the daily tide cycle and with any frequency. [The fishing] procedure is as follows. The tie-back ropes on one end of the net are slackened; then, this end of the net is gradually hauled onto the ice through the fishing hole. As the net is hauled, fish are "shook back" from the trap into the bunt. The bunt is untied and the fish removed; the bunt is then retied. ... form of military commission formerly used in the [United States(U. S.) ] and British armies. Under the system in which an officer was customarily promoted within his regiment or corps, a brevet conferred upon him a rank in the army at large higher than that held in his corps. Frequently it carried with it the pay, right to command, and uniform of the higher grade. In the United States especially, brevet rank was widely bestowed as a reward for outstanding service; it became the subject of extensive confusion and controversy during the American Civil War. The repeater, which consists of an amplifier and a programmable delay line, amplifies and delays the intercepted signal. By transmitting this signal back to the radar and gradually increasing the delay, the range gate in the radar tracking system can be captured and pulled away from the target echo, thereby producing range deception. In the jerk test of Hughston, the examiner flexes the knee to about 60°, grasps and internally rotates the distal tibia, and with his other hand applies a valgus stress to the knee. He then gradually extends the knee, maintaining the internal rotation and valgus pressure. The femoral condyle remains behind the summit of the plateau until, at about 20-30° flexion, the tightening posterior structures of the popliteus corner pull the tibial plateau back, and the subluxation relocates with a jerk. This test is positive in essentially the same injuries as the lateral pivot shift test of McIntosh... 1, record 61, English, - jerk%20test

Matter in the known universe can be classified in terms of four states : solid, liquid, gaseous, and plasma.... the transition from a gas to an ionized gas, i. e., plasma, is not a phase transition, since it occurs gradually with increasing temperature. During the process, a molecular gas dissociates first into an atomic gas which, with increasing temperature, is ionized as the collisions between atoms are able to free the outermost orbital electrons. Resulting plasma consists of a mixture of neutral particles, positive ions(atoms or molecules that have lost one or more electrons), and negative electrons. In a weakly ionized plasma the charge-neutral interactions are still important, while in strongly ionized plasma the multiple Coulomb interactions are dominant. 3, record 67, English, - plasma

Extensive dialogue and debate has centered on when the vegetative state becomes permanent. Originally, and in common usage today, the term "persistent" was equated with "permanent. "But the two terms should be distinguished, because some persistent vegetative state patients, especially those with traumatic head injuries, may gradually improve to higher levels of cognitive and motor functions in the first few months.... So the term "persistent" should be restricted to patients in a vegetative state of at least 1-month duration, while "permanent" should be used when it can be determined with an extremely high degree of certainty that the condition is irreversible. 2, record 73, English, - permanent%20vegetative%20state

Rock bursts. In areas of very deep mining, as additional weight is supported by the pillars on the coal face, stresses may so build up that the yield point is reached. If the coal pillars, the roof, or the floor are able to yield gradually, the effects of the stresses are relieved by floor heaving, or by pillar or roof failure. Where the coal or the associated rocks are particularly strong and depths are much above average, these stresses may be relieved by rock bursts, which are relatively violent outbursts of the coal into the rooms and entries. Frequently, a large volume of gas(usually methane) is suddenly released during a rock burst in a coal mine. 8, record 82, English, - rock%20burst

for "coal burst" : Rock bursts and "coal bursts" in coal mines are generally designated by the term "bumps" or "bounces". for "air blast" : In former years rock bursts were sometimes referred to as "air blasts". floes de batture : Grands floes épais, inégaux et de couleur altérée qui se forment en amont des hauts-fonds et des petites îles des rivières et fleuves lorsque les marées de mortes eaux sont précédées ou accompagnées de temps froid. 1, record 99, French, - floe%20de%20batture
Record number: 99, Textual support number: 1 OBS
