GRADUATED STEM [5 records]

Record 1 2024-08-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Measuring Instruments (Engineering)
  • Forestry Operations
  • Silviculture
DEF

A graduated stick used to estimate tree diameters by holding it at [a right angle] to the axis of the stem and comparing the graduations cut by lines of sight tangential to either edge of the stem.

OBS

The graduations assume observation at a specified distance of the stick from the eye.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments de mesure (Ingénierie)
  • Exploitation forestière
  • Sylviculture
CONT

OBS

With straight stopcock at top and 3-way stopcock at bottom. The top stem is straight and the bottom stems are bent sideways at right angles to the graduated tube.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Équipement (Chimie)
DEF

Record 3 2001-01-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Instruments
  • Chemistry
DEF

An instrument for determining the specific gravity of liquids, or sometimes(as in Nicholson's hydrometer) for finding the specific gravity of either liquids or solids. The common type consists of a graduated stem having a hollow bulb and a weight at its lower end, so as to float with the stem upright in a liquid, the specific gravity of which is indicated by the depth to which the stem is immersed. Special names are given to it as constructed for particular liquids, as alcoholometer, acidimeter, lactometer, etc.

DEF

An instrument for measuring the specific gravity of a liquid commonly consisting of a thin glass or metal tube graduated to indicate either specific gravities or percentages of solution constituents and weighted so that it floats upright.

DEF

An instrument, consisting of a graduated glass tube terminating in a loaded bulb, for measuring the specific gravity of fluids; a hydrometer.

OBS

The French term "hydromètre" was apparently adopted from English, but has commonly the sense of "rain-gauge", the hydrometer being called in French "aréomètre."

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments scientifiques
  • Chimie
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Measuring Instruments
  • Silviculture
  • Forestry Operations
CONT

diameter tape : A tape measure specially graduated so that the diameter may be read directly when the tape is placed round a tree stem or log... A similar tape for direct reading of the quarter-girth... is termed a quarter-girth tape.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Appareils de mesure
  • Sylviculture
  • Exploitation forestière
CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Instruments
  • Silviculture
  • Forestry Operations

... an instrument(based) on the scissor principle,(which) gripped the stem between knobs terminating its fore-arms, so that its diameter(s) could be read directly on a curved graduated scale fixed to one of the handled rear-arms and traversed by the other.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments scientifiques
  • Sylviculture
