In the region below the surface, snow compaction is thought to occur in three stages. In the first stage near the surface, compaction occurs by grain growth and rearrangement due to grain boundary sliding. In the second stage, compaction occurs through increasing overburden pressure inducing creep deformation and sintering. In the final stage, interconnected pores have closed off, and further compaction is caused by air bubble compression. 3, record 2, English, - snow%20compaction

This insect, common in Great-Britain and Canada’s West Coast, is an omnivorous scavenger of cereal screenings, dust, etc. Occasionally it is a major pest of bulk wheat, bagged flour and a variety of stored commodities. In the home it is much more important as a clothes moth than as a pest of stored foods. 1, record 4, English, - brown%20house%20moth
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The adults vary in size with the male having a wing-spread of about 2 centimetres, while the female may at times exceed 2. 5 centimetres. The forewings are dark brown with a number of blackish-brown spots. Approximately 300 eggs are laid by each female, most of them within a few days of mating. Three times as many eggs are laid on sacking as on grain. The mature larva is about 2 centimetres in length, shiny white in colour, with a yellow head. The feeding larva spins a light, closely-woven tube of silk as it eats its way through a food mass. When temperatures are too low, many of the larvae become dormant rather than pupate, extending the larval stage. High relative humidity is a requirement for satisfactory larval growth. At summer temperatures and a relative humidity of approximately 90% the life cycle takes about 100 days. 1, record 4, English, - brown%20house%20moth

1, record 4, French, - %26oelig%3Bcophore%20bronz%C3%A9e
Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 OBS
1, record 4, French, - %26oelig%3Bcophore%20bronz%C3%A9e

The Indian-meal moth has a wing-spread of about 2 centimetres. The forewings are creamy white next to the body, and have a reddish-brown colour with a coppery lustre on the outer two-thirds. The female moth lays about 200 eggs, either singly or in groups, on food material. The larvae are dirty white in colour, often with a greenish or pinkish tint. The newly hatched larvae are almost never seen because of their small size and the fact that they burrow as far as two metres into the grain mass. They normally remain in the grain until they have completed their larval growth. When fully grown they are about 1. 2 centimetres long. In summer their life cycle is about six weeks. 1, record 5, English, - indian%2Dmeal%20moth
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The Indian-meal moth is cosmopolitan in distribution, feeding on stored grain as well as nuts, dried fruits and packaged cereals. The principal damage caused to wheat is to the germ: a single larva may destroy the germ of approximately 50 kernels in completing its development. Degermed kernels reduce the grade and produce flour inferior in baking quality. 1, record 5, English, - indian%2Dmeal%20moth

The batch-in-bin drying process involves using a bin as a batch dryer. A 3 to 4-foot deep layer of grain is placed in the bin and the fan and heater started. Typical drying air temperatures are 120 to 160F with airflow rates of 8 to 15 cfm/bushel. Drying begins at the floor and progresses upward. Grain at the floor of the bin becomes excessively dry while the top layer of the batch remains fairly wet. The grain is cooled in the bin after it is dried. Some batch-in-bin dryers hold the grain being dried in a layer near the roof. After the grain is dried it is dropped to the bin floor where it is cooled. As the grain is moved from the bin, the grain is mixed, and the average moisture content going into final storage should be low enough that mold growth will not be a problem. 2, record 10, English, - batch%20dryer

In a pneumatic plant the germination bed depth will often be greater than one meter. If left alone, the heat produced would accelerate growth and the roots would matt together forming a solid mass. This was the problem that Galland had in his first plan. To overcome this, the bed must have a perforated floor with a chamber below so that air can be blown through the bed. Hence the term pneumatic malting. This air must be humidified to stop the grain from drying out, but more water will be lost from the bed than in floor malting. Additionally, the grain bed must be turned using large helical screw turners. 2, record 22, English, - pneumatic%20malting
