[The] use of a laser to divide a diamond crystal. Laser sawing often entails greater weight loss than conventional methods, but it can safely and easily saw intergrown crystals or those containing naats; thus such diamonds can be divided successfully, regardless of crystal orientation. It also permits rough diamonds to be polished in their optimum grain directions. 3, record 5, English, - laser%20sawing

Electron backscattered diffraction in a scanning electron microscope allows the crystallographic orientation of small grains to be measured precisely. EBSD can be used to study crystallographic preferred orientations, grain boundary and twin characteristics, to quantitatively map grain microstructures and for characterisation of fine-grained phases. We are using the EBSD to investigate the microstructural and crystallographic signatures of deformation recrystallisation and reaction processes in rocks. 1, record 6, English, - electron%20backscattered%20diffraction

Compaction mould samples. During desiccation events a soil will experience shrinkage induced stresses. These stresses are likely to slightly alter the grain orientation, residual stress and density of the soil in a similar manner to altering the compaction parameters. The associated effects of this density change have been simulated through the use of artificially made samples. The approach examined the effect of different compaction density and moulding water content upon the soil suction-water content relationship(ie the water retention characteristic).... it is evident that the water retention characteristic is shifted upwards as compaction density decreases and moulding water content increases. This means that the water content is increased for a given value of soil suction. 3, record 7, English, - moulding%20water%20content
