... the UAB [University of Alabama at Birmingham] team probed deeper into the welding process and made a fundamental metallurgical discovery-constitutional liquid film migration-a phenomenon that Dr. Thompson says would not have been found without the Gleeble. In the 1980's, researchers working in solid state electronic devices discovered diffusion-induced grain boundary migration, in which diffusion of elements from the top layer of a device would cause the grain boundaries to move in unpredictable directions. Five years later, other investigators found that running a liquid along the grain boundary could also cause it to move. Then, in the course of their NASA-related research, Dr. Thompson and his colleagues discovered that liquid film migration of grain boundaries occurred naturally during welding as the result of precipitates liquating in the heat affected zone. The UAB team further found that the migration distance was an order of magnitude greater than previously observed and that new grains were actually formed during the process. A laboratory in France measures a "brown index" for determining degree of brownness in macaroni products. Reflectance at 550 nanometres of a pressed disc of sheeted semolina dough is measured and calculated in terms of the index. Another method, used in Canada by the Grain Research Laboratory, is to determine absorbance of an aqueous extract of semolina at 400 nanometres. Les essais de panification en vraie grandeur ont lieu à l'aide du grain obtenu dans les essais coopératifs des blés panifiables (centre et ouest). Pour ces essais, on cultive dans une vingtaine de stations les nouvelles variétés à côté des variétés témoins dont le Marquis. All of the early Canadian durum wheat varieties had low yellow pigment content by the standards of today (Table 1). However, screening procedures were in place to ensure that yellow pigment levels would improve. Nugget, which was developed in North Dakota, USA, was the first North American durum wheat line released with superior color characteristics. According to Irvine (1965) Nugget had two to three times the yellow pigment content of other Canadian and American durum varieties at that time, and low lipoxygenase activity. The Saskatchewan Canola Growers’ Association was formed in 1968 by rapeseed growers to promote research, production and marketing of rapeseed(now known for the most part as canola). The Binishell pneumatic-form construction technique for bulk grain is another interesting development in concrete storage. In this concept, reinforcing steel is laid out on the ground, concrete is poured on top of it, and the pneumatic form lifts the whole "pie" up from the centre to its final dome shape. After the concrete sets, the pneumatic form is removed. This type of dome can also be erected with vertical sidewalls to produce a conventional bulk storage bin, with a diameter as large as 30 metres.
