GRAIN SCREW [7 records]

CONT

The crib annex obtains its name because it is built using the same cribbing principles as the elevator. It is usually partitioned into storage bins 2. 7 metres by 2. 7 metres or 3. 7 metres by 3. 7 metres depending upon the amount of strength required to coincide with the desired height of the annex. These annexes are normally about the same height as the elevator and for this reason, gravity is not used for filling them. Instead, they are filled using a horizontal grain auger or drag conveyor which leads from the elevator distributor spout to the selected annex bin. A screw auger empties the annex by bringing grain from the spout of the desired bin into the elevator's back hopper.

Other less efficient and less common means of unloading box cars involve augermobiles, front-end loaders and power shovels. The augermobile is a large powered screw auger which moves the grain from a stationary car into an unloading pit in about eight minutes.

As new and larger elevators were built, companies often moved old elevators beside one another and used them as annexes to a new elevator. In these facilities, grain is elevated to the top of the operating elevator, moved by screw auger to the distributor spout of the annexed elevator and then allowed to flow by gravity to the desired storage bin. It is emptied by screw auger which moves the grain from the annex elevator into the back hopper of the operating elevator.

In a pneumatic plant the germination bed depth will often be greater than one meter. If left alone, the heat produced would accelerate growth and the roots would matt together forming a solid mass. This was the problem that Galland had in his first plan. To overcome this, the bed must have a perforated floor with a chamber below so that air can be blown through the bed. Hence the term pneumatic malting. This air must be humidified to stop the grain from drying out, but more water will be lost from the bed than in floor malting. Additionally, the grain bed must be turned using large helical screw turners.
