Service time is the time the ship is at the unloading berth being unloaded or serviced. Obviously it depends on the ship unloader(s) being used. Ship unloaders for grain are designed and specified for a particular unloading rate expressed in tonnes per hour. But in reality, the average unloading rate is very much lower than rated unloading capacity and, in part, is a function of ship size. The larger the ship, the more efficient the performance of the unloader and the shorter the service time. 1, record 14, English, - service%20time

Heavy grain or light grain : charters rates are normally set at so much per tonne of grain transported. Obviously a ship of a given volume can be loaded with more tonnes of high-density "heavy" grains(wheat, corn, rye or soybeans) than with "low-density "light" grains(barley, oats, flaxseed or canola). Thus the type of grain hauled could determine the shipowners’ income for the charter. Charter terms state whether "heavy" grains or "light" grains are to be carried and set a rate for each. The primary function of a port grain terminal is either to load or unload ships, depending on whether it is an export or an import facility. In transshipment facilities, both functions are involved. Regardless of the type of terminal, however, the emphasis is on throughput. Storage capacity is incidental and can normally be limited to the minimum required to eliminate interruptions in the transshipment function. Other factors of course can have a bearing on storage capacity, such as the existence of local onshore markets or anticipated lengthy delays in ship movement. The geographical location of the terminal will determine which of these or other factors must be considered. 1, record 19, English, - port%20grain%20terminal

1, record 19, French, - silo%20portuaire

Many pneumatic systems are mounted on barges which can be towed to a seagoing vessel to discharge the cargo midstream. These barge-mounted pneumatic systems are called floating elevators. Most floating elevators have four succion pipes with a total discharging capability of between 250 and 400 tonnes per hour. The main advantage of the floating elevator is its mobility.
