In establishing a feasible train operation on a train run, the "spotting capacity" on each primary elevator at each loading point being assigned rail cars must be considered. Spotting capacity is the number of empty cars that can be placed for loading at an elevator without either the empty or subsequently loaded cars interfering with the loading operation at an adjacent facility. Allocating shipping orders in excess of spotting capacity results in a shortfall in a loading plan and a temporary under-supply of grain at an export point. 1, record 2, English, - loading%20point

1, record 2, French, - point%20de%20chargement

For purposes of grain transportation, the railway network in the grain growing area of Western Canada is divided into 49 segments. Each is known as a shipping block. There are 27 blocks on Canadian national, 20 on CP Rail, and two on Northern Alberta Railways. A block is a grouping of railway train runs established so that a railway can, within a block, provide flexible train service from week to week to the various branchlines. There may be two shipping blocks on one geographical area, one for CP Rail and one for Canadian national. 1, record 4, English, - shipping%20block

Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 DEF
The network of 48 shipping areas or blocks into which the grain producing area of western Canada is divided. Each block represents a train run or railway subdivision or a group of such subdivisions on which are situated a number of shipping points within a fairly homogeneous production area. The shipping blocks are the units within which the Canadian Wheat Board allocates shipping orders among the companies operating elevators within the block. The elevator companies assign the orders to their elevator managers within each block, and this assignment governs the spotting of cars at the elevators for the loading of grain authorized by the shipping orders. 2, record 5, English, - Block%20Shipping%20System
