Using condo storage enables producers to position their grain closer to the market and allows them to initiate a sale at any time from anywhere around the world. Producers are also able to avoid spring road bans and the difficulty of moving grain by truck in the winter from on farm storage bins to a primary elevator. The results showed that railroads had the most market power over long, cross-country moves. However, there were exceptions. Unlike the grain freight market, for frozen freight, the length of haul was less of a determining factor behind truck and rail competition. Across all haul distances, rail demand for frozen products, on average, was more sensitive to changes in rail rates than frozen truck demand was to changes in truck rates. As a result, rail carriers are less likely to hold substantial market power in the frozen freight markets. For frozen freight, trucks compete with rail for shipments, even over long distances. This effect is likely due to frozen freight's time sensitivity and lower volumes(than grain). An example will illustrate how the computer assists the operation. Joe Smith delivers a truck load of grain to the elevator, and is directed by the central control board operator(CBO) to receiving pit. Using an alphanumeric keyboard, the CBO types in Smith's account number, the code number of the receiving pit(origin) and the code number of the selected bin(destination) in which his grain will be stored. The computer then determines all possible alternate routes between the receiving pit and the bin and displays them in detail on the video screen. The operator selects the route he wants to use by typing in the proper instruction. All but the selected route codes disappear from the video screen. Truck unloading facilities, like those for rail, vary from terminal to terminal. Recently, large semitrailer hopper trucks have come into the grain movement. They carry between 20 and 30 tonnes and unload through bottom discharge gates into an unloading pit.
