GRAINED PLATE [4 records]

Record 1 2005-05-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Engraving and Printmaking (Arts)
  • Intaglio Printing
DEF

An etching technique that preserves the artist’s brushwork and permits broad areas of color instead of thin, dry lines.

OBS

The artist begins by painting the metal plate with a solution of sugar and black ink. The entire plate is then coated with an acid-resistant varnish. When the plate is immersed in warm water, the sugar mixture melts, lifting away part of the varnish. The plate is then grained for texture... and dipped in acid. Where the varnish has been lifted, the acid bites into the plate. In printing, ink gathers in this etched area and creates a rich black tone on the paper.

  • Gravure d'art
  • Impression en creux (héliogravure)
OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Lithography, Offset Printing and Collotype
DEF

A type of lithographic press plate, consisting of a base metal of stainless steel, aluminium or other metal on which other metals are plated, usually copper and then chromium.

OBS

Lithographic plate making techniques are used to etch the surface metal of image to reach the copper for image base; surface metal remains for the non-printing areas. The nature of the surface metal with the dampening solution helps in repelling the ink from non-printing areas. Such plates have a long life and no mechanically grained surface.

OBS

Mokume-Ji : A Japanese metal art which produces a ground resembling grained wood. In this process several thin metal plates are beaten together. The plate is then punched from one side so that the opposite side resembles broken blisters. These blisters are hammered down until each produces its own wave effect. Although iron was generally used, the finest work was in shakudo with a gold graining.
