The woodwork around the room is "grained", as it is throughout the house, to resemble oak. Graining was a common wood finish because different kinds of wood could be imitated, displaying elaborate and decorative wood grains. Besides being attractive, the grained wood was highly varnished, making it easier to clean than painted wood. 1, record 2, English, - grained

Mokume-Ji : A Japanese metal art which produces a ground resembling grained wood. In this process several thin metal plates are beaten together. The plate is then punched from one side so that the opposite side resembles broken blisters. These blisters are hammered down until each produces its own wave effect. Although iron was generally used, the finest work was in shakudo with a gold graining. 3, record 3, English, - mokume%20gane

Record number: 4, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The main source of sandalwood is Santalum album, a small evergreen tree native to India. The heartwood of S. album is yellow-brown, very hard, and close grained. It is made odorous by the presence of an oil, which is even more abundant in the roots... Red sandalwood is obtained from Pterocarpus santalinus, a small leguminous tree found in southern India, Ceylon, and the Philippines. This wood is used in making a dye that gives wool a red-brown color. 2, record 4, English, - sandalwood

4, record 4, French, - santal
