Grainy appearance of a heat-set web offset print done on a groundwood containing paper, especially on coated groundwood papers like lightweight coated. A disturbance in the surface structure of a printed sheet which appears as a roughened or raised surface area comparable to a fibre or fibre bundle in size. It occurs in the dryers of heat-set printing presses and is particularly noticeable in areas of heavy ink coverage or if excessive heat is used in the driers.

Coated paper defect where specks give a grainy or textured appearance to the coated surface. They are manifest in prints by variations in ink receptivity or printed gloss. In paper they appear as small dots usually 0. 75 mm(1/32") in diameter, randomly distributed over all or much of the web area. Detectable by ink wipe, print test or light iodine burn-out. May contribute to mottle(backtrap mottle). Caused by non-uniform binder distribution(migration).
