GRAM-NEGATIVE ORGANISM [5 records]

Record 1 2023-05-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
CONT

Foods with a parasitic bacterium, Bdellovibrio Bacteriovorus. The addition of B. bacteriovorus, an obligate parasite of gram-negative bacteria, to meats and meat products reduces the gram-negative population, lengthens the shelf-life, and reduces the risks of food-borne illness. The organism is intended to be applied to the surface of the food, onto food contact surfaces by spraying or dipping, or as part of a sanitizing rinse. It may also be used on uncooked seafoods and whole eggs. High parasitic activity occurs under aerobic conditions, near neutral pH, and at temperatures [greater or equal] to 20°C. Many pathogens are susceptible to attack by the parasitic organism.

OBS

parasitic bacteria: plural of "parasitic bacterium."

CONT

ACETATE DIFFERENTIAL AGAR. Medium used for the differentiation of Shigella from E. coli and non-fermentative gram-negative bacilli.... is used to test the ability of an organism to use acetate as the sole source of carbon.... Typical cultures of Shigella are unable to use acetate and fail to grow. Therefore, the medium remains unchanged. The majority of Escherichia coli grow well within 24-48 hours, but some strains grow more slowly and may give a false negative reaction if results are observed at 24-48 hours only.

CONT

A total of 245 isolates of Escherichia coli (paracolons) were employed in comparing the use of acetate differential agar (ADA) with the simple test described by Sellers to eliminate these organisms from consideration as enteric pathogens ...
