The Property Value Protection(PVP) Program was launched in 2001 as an integral part of the Legal Agreement that led to the creation of the Port Hope Area Initiative(PHAI). It provides assurance to property owners that if activities arising from the Port Hope or Port Granby projects affect the value of their home or land, compensation is available. The Program includes special services to assist owners of properties that show evidence of project effects and an independent appeals process for claimants who wish to appeal their PVP compensation award.

From 2001 to 2008, the Port Hope and Port Granby projects were managed by the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Management Office(LLRWMO). In 2009, Natural Resources Canada, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and Public Works and Government Services Canada formed the Port Hope Area Initiative Management Office to carry the projects through to completion. Beginning in 2011, construction of long-term waste management facilities will begin in Port Hope and Port Granby(eastern Clarington) to safely manage the waste for hundreds of years. This will be followed by the cleanup of the existing historic low-level radioactive waste found within each of these communities. In all, cleanup and construction are expected to take between six and eight years.

Wastes at Port Granby are buried in pits which are excavated down to the water table... in the Upper Sand Complex. The site is not a "disposal" site since active management is required to control the release of contaminants. Ditches are located on the upslope side of the disposal pits to divert runoff and groundwater. In addition, seepage is collected downslope of the pits at the base of the bluffs bordering Lake Ontario and treated.

Side dump cars, such as the Granby, are dumped by running the car alongside a dump block. A roller raises and pivots the body while the movable side remains vertical. A hold-down prevents the car from leaving the track. Cars can be dumped without uncoupling. Various other dumps, such as the cradle or kickback and crossover dumps, are used in some operations.
