permit: A written licence or warrant, issued by a person in authority, empowering the grantee to do some act not forbidden by law, but not allowable without such authority. The term "permit" is often confused with "licence," but important differences exist between the two .... In a few dictionaries, however, "permit" is given as a synonym of "licence" or as a type of licence. Il ne faut pas confondre les termes français «permis» et «licence» [...]. Le mot «permis» s'emploie obligatoirement avec un verbe, ou parfois un nom signifiant une action. Ainsi, on ne dit pas «permis de chasseur», mais plutôt «permis de chasse», «permis de construire» et non pas «permis de construction». Par contre, «licence» n'a pas de telles exigences. Enfin, il faut remarquer que le mot «permis» employé seul désigne souvent le permis de conduire. 5, record 3, French, - d%C3%A9livrer%20un%20permis

Adjustment; zoning variance: The synonym "adjustment" is rarely used. As for the term "zoning variance", it is more specific in that variance can equally be granted from building or other by-laws; in practice, however, variances usually apply to the zoning by-law, and particularly to provisions regarding setback, yards, and coverage due to exceptional conditions of topography, size or shape of a lot. Record number: 27, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The term "licence" is not invariably translated by the French "licence" although it is in most cases. The reason is that in English the term does not necessarily imply a business or occupation as does the French :"driver's licence" and "marriage licence" are examples of this. One must therefore be careful in translating "licence"--its usual French equivalent is "licence", but in some cases it can be "permis". An important characteristic distinguishing "licence" from "permit" is the fact that the former is not issued directly by the government but rather by a competent authority or by local authorities, while any of the three groups mentioned can issue a permit. Also, the licence is usually granted for an extended period of time whereas the permit normally authorizes an act of short duration. For example, we say "driver's licence", but "learner's permit". 3, record 27, English, - licence

Les subventions sont des paiements de transfert quel'État peut choisir de payer ou de ne pas payer. Bien que le paiement soit autorisé par voie législative, il n'existe aucune obligation de payer jusqu'à ce que la subvention ait été approuvée. Pour cette raison, aucun élément de passif ne doit être inscrit à la fin de l'exercice, sauf quand le droit du bénéficiaire a été dûment établi. 1, record 49, French, - droit%20d%27un%20b%C3%A9n%C3%A9ficiaire

license : A right or permission granted in accordance with law by a competent authority to engage in some business or occupation, to do some act, or to engage in some transaction which but for such license would be unlawful... Finally, note that in Canada the British spelling(licence) is used more often than the American spelling(license), although both are found in Canadian texts. 2, record 50, English, - issuing%20of%20licenses
