The performance share unit plan [is] designed to enhance the long-term performance of the company and to retain key employees. Yearly grants under the PSU plans are intended to complete [the company's] existing programme of annual performance-related bonuses, the reward for short-term performance and achievements. PSU plans are intended to promote the alignment of interests between the company's shareholders and eligible employees by allowing them to participate in the success of the company. The PSU plan's main objective is to be an effective performance-enhancing scheme based on the employee's contribution to the achievement of the company's strategy.

In August 1999, SSHRC developed, in partnership with Industry Canada's strategis team, a Web-based application form for Standard Research and Strategic Grants. As of July 31, 2000, SSHRC will also have forms posted on the Web site in support of the major Fellowships programs. This year the SSRHC Information Systems Division and the Council' s Web Application Unit redeveloped SSHRC' s forms.

A BIU is a unit of measurement of weighted enrolment. Different weights are assigned to different programs. For example, 5 BIU's might be alloted to a master's degree student, 10 master's degree students thus equalling 50 BIU's. This unit of measurement is used in the financing of Ontario university programs. Grants given by the Department of Education may be based on BIU's.
