English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Behaviour
  • Animal Feed (Agric.)
CONT

Grazing Behaviour.... The horse will avoid grazing where there is a smell of horses droppings, reducing the possibility of picking up parasitic worm eggs and resulting in the characteristic rough areas of pastures that are continually grazed.... The sense of smell is also used to identify plant species, enabling horses to be selective of grass or herb species and also to avoid certain poisonous weeds, i. e. ragwort.... The horse has sensitive hairs on the lips allowing them to determine how close to the ground they are grazing, and also, the maturity of individual plants.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Feed (Agric.)
  • Animal Husbandry
  • Forage Crops
CONT

For early-spring grazing.... Young, vigorous stands of alfalfa or alfalfa-grass mixtures in which the alfalfa has not been injured or weakened by bacterial wilt disease may be grazed evenly and heavily for about a week in early spring if the ground is firm. Excellent pasturage is provided by this treatment; it also delays the time of cutting and results, in a finer and better quality of hay.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Alimentation des animaux (Agric.)
  • Élevage des animaux
  • Culture des plantes fourragères
CONT

Record 5 1999-03-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Fences and Enclosures
DEF

A retaining wall, fence, or hedge hidden from view in a ditch; often used to improve the view from a house or main building while keeping out livestock.

DEF

A barrier in the form of a trench, particularly one used in country houses built in the eighteenth and nineteenth century, to prevent livestock from crossing into the garden.

CONT

The use of the ha-ha, or sunken fence, to create and at the same time conceal the physical division between garden and contiguous park grounds(a division needed to keep grazing animals out of the garden) was a major step in the creation of the new, "natural" garden. Walpole explains the purpose of the visual unification : The contiguous ground of the park without the sunk fence was to be harmonized with the lawn within; and the garden in its turn was to be set free from its prime regularity, that it might assort with the wilder country without.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Enceintes et clôtures
DEF

OBS

Pluriel : sauts-de-loup.
