There is a great deal of confusion about low-paid workers and low-income workers. Low-paid workers are individuals whose work effort is high, but whose earnings are low. However, they are not necessarily low-income workers if their needs are met only through their own earnings as well as those of other family members. In Canada, a person who works full time throughout the year for minimum wage is considered a low-paid worker. However, if this person lives with a spouse who earns $100, 000 a year, for example, he or she is obviously not in a low-income situation and could not be considered a low-income worker. 6, record 8, English, - low%2Dwage%20worker

It goes without saying that most cartographers are employed in map-making... Individual cartographers vary a great deal in what they do, but we can identify certain basic functions that are performed by cartographers in general. The most important of these are liaison, editing, drafting, reprographics, administration, research, teaching and custodianship. Citations are drawn from the international literature and include books, journal articles, conference proceedings, reports of litigation, and government documents. This database grew out of research by Dr. O’Keefe and Professor Prott for their five-volume series, Law and the Cultural Heritage. Topics include the theft of artifacts, repatriation, and the unlawful trade in cultural goods. Parent material, in soil science, means the underlying geological material(generally bedrock or a superficial or drift deposit) in which soil horizons form. Soils typically get a great deal of structure and minerals from their parent material. Parent materials are made up of consolidated or unconsolidated mineral material that has undergone some degree of physical or chemical weathering.... Parent material is classified by its last means of transport. So material that was transported to a location by glacier, then deposited elsewhere by streams, that material is classified as stream transported parent material, or fluvial parent material. Glacial till refers to material dragged with a moving ice sheet. Because it is not transported with liquid water, the material is not sorted by size. 3, record 39, English, - parent%20material

5, record 39, French, - mat%C3%A9riau%20parental

A hexapod robot is a mechanical vehicle that walks on six legs. Since a robot can be statically stable on three or more legs, a hexapod robot has a great deal of flexibility in how it can move. If legs become disabled, the robot may still be able to walk. Furthermore, not all of the robot's legs are needed for stability; other legs are free to reach new foot placements or manipulate a payload. Many hexapod robots are biologically inspired by Hexapoda locomotion. 2, record 47, French, - robot%20hexapode

Hogging occurs because the bow and stern of the ship, while carrying a considerable amount of heavy equipment, possesses relatively little buoyancy. Rate gyroscopes provide a means for measuring angular rate about a particular axis and are traditionally used in a variety of high accuracy control and guidance systems in aircraft, missiles and ships. The conventional rate gyro, based on a high speed rotor, is a mature but relatively complex, delicate and expensive product. For these reasons and the increasing market for less expensive devices, a great deal of research effort has been invested into the development of a rate gyro with a vibrating sensitive element, which would eliminate the need for ball bearing suspensions and hence reduce the mechanical complexity and cost whilst greatly increasing life and robustness. The principle of operation of these devices is based on the coriolis force, which couples together two degenerate modes of vibration of the sensitive element when the sensor rotates. 1, record 74, English, - conventional%20rate%20gyro

Simulation... is a procedure whereby real-world experiments are simulated by generating random numbers and making whatever other computations are needed. The real-world experiment can be simulated over and over again by generating more random numbers. To use the simulation technique it is often necessary to perform a great deal of arithmetic computation, and this is why computers are often needed. 2, record 86, English, - simulation

The use of biomass as a feedstock for the production of energy and chemicals has been a popular research topic over the past decade. One of the technologies receiving a great deal of attention is liquefaction in which biomass is converted to oil under high temperatures and pressures. This technology has evolved from a slow, chemical intensive process to a very rapid operation requiring little more than water. Feeling that typical reactor residence times(1-2 hours) were excessive, Beckman developed a small unit capable of reducing heat-up times to less than three minutes. Under these conditions it was found that neither a catalyst nor reducing gas was required. A mixture of only wood and water, when rapidly heated to 350°C, yielded an oil, char and gaseous and aqueous products. 1, record 94, English, - aqueous%20pyrolysis
