GREAT HORSES [8 records]

Record 1 2019-02-18

English

Subject field(s)
  • Military Organization
  • Land Forces
CONT

Regiments who were required to employ speed and stealth in their role as scouts and skirmishers ahead of the main body were not authorized to carry Colours. In Canada this included both hussar and rifle regiments.

CONT

The hussars played a prominent role as cavalry in the Revolutionary Wars(1792–1802) and Napoleonic Wars(1803–15). As light cavalrymen mounted on fast horses, they would be used to fight skirmish battles and for scouting. Most of the great European powers raised hussar regiments. The armies of France, Austria, Prussia, and Russia had included hussar regiments since the mid-18th century. In the case of Britain, four light dragoon regiments were converted to hussars in 1806–1807.

The Ardennais has a broad face with expressive eyes, well-opened nostrils and pointed ears. The neck is crested and the chest is wide and deep. The hindquarters are powerful and its massive body is compact. Although the legs are short, they are very muscular and well feathered.... Ardennais horses are very hardy - they can survive in unfavourable climates on little food. Despite being so tough, they are exceptionally gentle and easy to handle.

OBS

Its homeland is the mountainous Ardennes region on the border of France and Belgium.... The Ardennais is thought to have descended from the war horses of the Middle Ages, and was again in great demand at the beginning of the 19th century during Napoleon's invasion of Russia. More recently it was used as an artillery horse in the first World War.

Polo ponies today are really not ponies. They are Thoroughbred horses. Their training is the training given a good reining horse. However, they are asked for speed far greater than that of any reining horse, and there is a great variety of devices used to induce these Thoroughbreds(bred for centuries to run, not to stop) to stop quickly enough to be useful as polo ponies.

OBS

Not a breed, not exclusively American. A polo pony is simply any horse trained and used for playing polo. Horses adaptable for this highly specialized use are necessarily somewhat uniform in type: small, fast, agile, and courageous.
